Man, this book tips on that tightrope between quirky and gibberish so well Janelle Monae would be hella impressed.
That said, this is kind-of what I was hoping for with this book--Winnick's Selina by way of Guy Richie had it's charm (IMO), but when I first heard of this, I was expecting some more high stakes superhero thievery.
Yeah, the descriptions of all the weird artifacts was great--I forget where I saw it, but someone made a great observation that if she were to ever go on another book, she would totally fit something like House of Mystery.
That dialogue is weird. Not necessarily bad, just really kind of strange to read. And Selina sure is using a lot of nicknames for that dude, I expect to see her call him variations on such classics as tiger, sport, slick, champ, chief, big fella, etc etc. in no time. Also, I find myself with very little patience for Catwoman's arbitrary skepticism. Even accepting that this DCU isn't as far along the timeline as the previous one, so maybe people aren't as used to the idea of demons and alternate realities and so on, it still annoys me when people brush off stuff like that in a world where Superman and Wonder Woman are prominent public figures.
Kirby's dialogue seemed overheated mostly because of the punctuation; unitalicize every third word and remove 90% of the exclamation points and it really wasn't bad. Ann Nocenti's dialogue really is overheated.
I REALLY want to like this book... but the writing is all over the place.... at least Winick was coherent... between the nicknames and weird dialogue.... I'm lost
Aside from my other comments above, all that the first panel makes me think of is how most of your Olympic-level female gymnasts in the real world tend to have rather small chests.
