I'm actually not too worried about that. I pretty much love everyone at this party, so even if someone I heart with all my feels dies, I'm not left reading about characters I'm not keen on.
First - OP, would you credit Fiona Staples in the tags? I'm a big fan ever since she started on this book, and I think she should be better-known.
Second - I'm actually feeling quite bad for Marko's mother. The way events have been shaping up, she seems to be wrong about nearly everything, and that's going to come back and hurt her. That and her husband's condition.
Third - It's not easy being a floating squid brain.
Damn. Did not realise that, sorry. Could you perhaps compromise and put her name in the titles? "Saga by Brian Vaughn and Fiona Staples", sort of thing?
TV paid better. That and, given he hasn't opted to return to Marvel, even with the success of Saga, to say, kickstart Runaways again? Suggests he clocked on to some of the reasons the likes of Brubaker and Rucka appear to have left Marvel entirely now, long before they did.
I agree that it was probably for money. And then when he learned how shitty Hollywood treats writers, he came back to comics where he gets creative control and recognition.
He left because Marvel gave him zero control and notice when it came to Frank being shoved onto the Thunderbolts. Vaughan, on the other hand, probably had enough money from working on Lost, but doesn't appear to have had negative experiences in Hollywood.
I'd assume he had the same negative experiences every writer has in Hollywood -- which is why nearly every writer of note is also either a producer, director, or both. A direct quote from Joss Whedon is that in Hollywood "writers are shit". Because the directors, producers, and often the actors decide what parts of what you write actually get used, if *any*. He might not have had any *uniquely* bad experiences, but working there was almost certainly an eye-opener, hence him coming back to comics to do Saga. There's no way he'd get Saga done the way he wanted in TV or film, not without at least 20 years more experience there under his belt.
Of the three creators you're discussing, Rucka is the only one who's actually departed out of irritation, and even he has said repeatedly that he's not even that mad. Both Brubaker and Vaughan departed Marvel on good terms and are simply more inclined to do creator-owned projects right now. They've said as much in interviews.
