And, honestly, it's one that I kind of dig, even if it's a bizarre cross between Hawkgirl, Giraud from Guardians of the Galaxy, and Nightwing...with a little bit of Kree soldier stuff mixed in (as a friend pointed out to me).
Can't say the new look appeals to me. It might work for another character, but it doesn't suggest Bette Kane's Flamebird to me. The white skin thing is an interesting visual gimmick for Kate, but not as a general "thing".
That is some insane lighting right there. Blue skin, vivid gold armor (she does look like a Kree superhero in the big first panel) and glowing yellow eyes?
I'm still mad about Bette getting jobbed the first time and I don't really like the darker look. I've had a big soft spot for her since the Beast Boy mini and everything since she showed up here just makes me sad.
I never understand the argument against capes, I know there's the whole cute Edna Mode thing about how they are impractical and of course, they are, but so is the whole concept of superhero costumes (especially those for non-powered heroes with secret identities which don't include full body armour and a full face mask and voice distorter). Capes can look very striking and very cool and if that works, go for it as it's all about form over function, well to me at any rate, but I freely confess to being a dinosaur about such things.
I liked the cape a lot as well. It was the standout element of the Perez design and carried through the various tweaks. Not sure how this will look under other artists (I'm optimistically hoping there's a future for the costume), but apparently the next arc features a new artist (sadly), so I guess we'll find out. (I was also hoping that either in the zero issue or in this arc's occasional views of Bette's convalescence we might get a glimpse of her history, which was vague even pre-Flashpoint!)
I'm with you on capes. The Edna thing is cute but there's nothing more stylish or dramatic than a cape, IMO. I can't imagine Batman without one, and Superman with a cape works for me.
I'm surprised that Dick prefers no capes. I suppose it's an aerodynamic thing (and he gets to show off his best, ahem, asset) but he should know that a cape is great for dramatic flair! ;)
I think he noted, not long after becoing Batman in RIP, that the full length, heavy duty protection cape that Bruce had used severely limited him (his infamous "It's like wearing a kevlar ballgown" comment), as opposed to his Robin cape, which had been made out of nylon so weighed nothing, didn't usually drape down in front of him chest (Tim's cape did, but the original Robin costume didn't), and only reached as his butt.
I was thinking it looked reminiscent of Nightwing's costume, too, which could work, given her inspiration for superheroing and what. But then it also looks a bit like she's wearing a Viking helmet or something, which could be intimidating but somehow just looks silly to me.
