That might actually be interesting to use WHAT IF...? as a testing ground for celebrity writers, where they can flex some continuity muscles, come to think of it.

A variety of folks like Patton Oswalt, John Hodgman, and Freddie Prinze Jr. have expressed a love for obscure storylines or attempted to cross into comics writing. Unfortunately, they had the stigma of being seen as an outsider and sales fell flat. Meanwhile, anthologies tend to suffer in the opposite direction, having little broad appeal.

Imagine if they relaunched WHAT IF...? as a place where celebrity fans got to establish continuity cred and storytelling skills.

So you might have George R.R. Martin do a Doctor Strange run that way, for example, and actually be encouraged to pursue an insular take.
