I realized I've been neglecting the DC bad-ass ladies, probably due to my fondness of a certain family of red heads. And the sheer awesomeness of Danielle Moonstar.
Odd bit of dissonance going on there in the longest fight scene, between the evident misogyny of the men Canary's fighting and the fact that it seems to be a woman in charge of the whole gathering.
It's certainly possible for elderly women to be sexist, especially given the shifting cultural mores, but specifically it seems a bit odd for the shirtless martial arts guys to be saying (as best I can determine) that a woman's place is naked in the kitchen and still be taking orders from one.
Incidentally, what's the deal with that storyline? My guess just from the pages presented would be that Black Canary had been involved with a cult/drug ring in her youth, and this is her overcoming that history and the people who hurt and used her in the past, but I'm not aware of any such event in Dina's backstory.
Lady Shiva thinks that Black Canary has what it takes to be a true opponent for her skills, so she convinces Dinah to take the Shiva training. The old woman is the one who made Lady Shiva the death machine she is and she was doing the same thing to the little girl there. Dinah completed enough of the training to be a god tier martial artist, rescued the girl, and went back to America. It was a big level up moment for Dinah.
The culture hates women, but they have a ton of respect for anyone who survives the Shiva training. Surviving means that you're something more than human.

Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
