Foggy awaits the blood results that will tell him whether he has cancer.

I didn't think anyone could fill Brubaker's shoes on this title, but Mark Waid is really doing great things with Daredevil. Superheroes, drama, pathos, even humor. And of course the tragedy.

The difference seems to be that whilst there are high-stakes and there's still drama, Matt's life doesn't seem so mind-numbingly awful like it did at times, especially during Brubaker's run. Waid's run just feels a little more well-rounded, thanks to the slight shift away from making it incredibly hard-boiled.

It is actually going to end up being Stilt Man, mark my words.

Anyway, I think I may have to give this book another shot. I gave up on it after the Omega Effect cross-over, where I was just tired of the story they were doing, and even after a multi-title cross-over it STILL didn't finish it.

Black Spectre? Carson Knowles, Moon Knight's bad guy?

Nope, this Black Spectre actually predates Knowles using the name.

Isn't Daredevil excellent when the writer and artist decide not to regurgitate the same 3 ideas (Kingpin, Bullseye, the Hand).

I didn't mind it so much when Brubaker used Fisk because I think that particular set of stories did a good job of hammering home the fact that as the years went by, Fisk was increasingly playing out of his league and that his losses weren't nearly worth continuing to fight Daredevil. And then Marvel allowed that to be turned on it's head during Shadowland, which.. Eh. Kingpin should've just been put to rest for a few years. I'm also surprised Bullseye's death is still intact.

The fact that Matt's life under Waid's writing isn't all doom and gloom actually makes the tragic moments like this that much more powerful.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but character gets cancer because DRAMA is just so boring and pointless and cliche.

What a lazy way to create pathos.

Although Waid's work in this DD run has been good, that little bit of metafictional inside joke--"Nice work, Stiltman. You shouldn't have signed it"--complete with quotes around it, really bugs me. Even if Earth-616 Marvel Comics has an authorized Daredevil comic, and even if they had published some version of the Born Again storyline, that bit of internal narration wouldn't have made it in under any plausible circumstances. Given the amount of Waid's creator-owned work that's superhero metacommentary using thinly-veiled expies of classic superheroes, you'd think that he could set aside the cute references; the book's more than good enough without it.
