"Primates" GN: possibly relevant to our interests

Boing Boing, a directory of wonderful things, has a preview up of "Primates," an upcoming graphic novel by Jim Ottaviani and illustrator Maris Wicks. The GN will cover the professional histories of the three great female primatologists of the 20th century: Dian Fossey, Jane Goodall and Biruté Galdikas.

Awesome! I'll keep an eye out!

Though, given that they seem to be keeping this pretty light and all-ages, I do wonder how they're going to handle some of Fossey's story without diluting her efforts overmuch. Dealing with the poachers meant some pretty grisly episodes and then there's her final fate... :(

I wondered that too - and how they'd handle Fossey's general abrasiveness and discomfort around other humans even before she went into the wild. Goodall's story, OTOH, seems to me to have been just the opposite - better science, but not a lot of drama. Different temperaments.

Granted, these preview pages are set in the early 60s, but they look to be hitting the "tee-hee, silly girls wanna do SCIENCE!" line pretty hard. Wonder if that's a running theme.

I wasn't familiar with Fossey's personality and history until recently, I'm hoping the story deals with it directly.

Isn't this gorgeous? The other preview pages are text-heavy and probably would've been more representative, but this one was just so lovely I had to use it for the post.

Gorgeous work. The sparing use of the hard black outline on the foliage is brilliant -- it really works for the storytelling, without getting into that usual trouble about hard outlines on leaves.

I was more than a little surprised, while perusing Wikipedia, to discover that Fossey was...sorta mean.
