[personal profile] auggie18 posting in [community profile] scans_daily

Mystique and Destiny are one of my favorite couples and arguably one of the first examples of a gay family in comics, given the fact that they raised Rogue together. This was in a time where being gay in comics was fairly verboten, particularly considering Jim Shooter's views on homosexuality. Because of this, Mystique and Destiny's relationship was kept pretty low key, which I think sort of worked for the pair. They had been together a long time and were very comfortable with each other. They were affectionate in ways that showed they were in love, but subtle enough to fly under the radar. Destiny kept Mystique steady, focused, and curbed her evil a bit. (This is just my interpretation of their relationship, though.) More recently they've been able to address the lovers aspect of the relationship, which is kinda neat.

(I don't have access to my comics, so the quality of these scans are a bit iffy.)

*wibble*

Oh, Rogue. It wouldn't have. But the thought is nice.

Next up, Cannon and Saber! (If I can find my scans with them.)

I didn't realize Marvel had actually treated Mystique and Destiny as a couple in actual publications, even if they appear to be a couple of decades after Destiny's on frame death.

As a side note, I only just learned of the reasons they never went ahead with showing them as a couple at the time and Shooter's logic is certainly somewhat amazing if the story is true.

The ONLY more or less positive relationship Mystique has ever had in her life. Destiny is probably the one person Mystique never betrayed.

You forgot the scene where Destiny trolls Mysytique from beyond the grave with her ashes.

Wait, why does a writer of a comic dictate what can be posted here? Is he anti-scans daily or something?

Well, here is the story: Once upon a time scans daily was located on live journal. But then Peter David discovered that people were posting scans of comics he had written on it. Now I am not very well versed in legalese, but I'm pretty sure that, in spite of our own self imposed scanning limits on pages, it's not ENTIRELY legal and the big comic companies are well within their right to shut this place down if they want. Its just that, y'know, we're relatively small potatoes so they don't bother.

Peter David however, did bother, and rather than deal with the legal troubles Livejournal done shut us down.

So the new rule is no posting stuff by he who shall not be posted.

I thought it was more the fact that people didn't like what some of our reactions were to the pregnancy storyline's end in "X-Factor." What a mess. (LJ, I mean.)

my favorite Mystique / Destiny exchange was after Destiny's death and her prophecy that she would make Mystique laugh if was the last thing she did.

and she did.

only have the bit in hardcopy, somewhere among my collection, so I can't post any pics

Also, as noted above it's a Peter David story, so it can't be posted here.

His three "Tribute the" stories are excellent the first is Jean Grey mourning Madelyne Prior (I think I might have a y and an i mixed up there), the second was a ghost story told from the point of view of the ghost of Doug Ramsey, and the third was the Irene/Raven one you mention.

Even though we cannot post the scan. What issue of X-Factor was it in by PAD? For inquiring minds who want to find and hunt the issue down?

It is one of the more... blatant bits of naming weirdness from Claremont.

She was specifically referred to as Irene's "consulting detective", so I think so.

I was a young'un when Claremont and Byrne were using Mystique and Destiny as mysterious villains (and I believe they invented Destiny) in X-Men. I stopped paying attention to the X-Universe quite a long time ago, and if you'd asked me now about these two I would have strained to remember and then said that Destiny was probably Mystique's secret mother (since there is some relationship hinted at, and their age difference seemed so vast).

It's really interesting to see the full story presented here. Huh. Well, good for them.

Remember though that Mystique is older than she looks being a shape shifter and all... And while she definitely showed physical interest in both women and men in her solo series I think she's more attracted to Destiny's mind and personality.

Late comment is super late but thank you for this post. I love this relationship. I totally want a comic about Rogue growing up and her mommies' terrorist hijinxes.
