Pandora told us that last issue that only someone truly pure or dark of heart could lift her curse, the presence of the Seven Deadly Sins in the world. She'd assumed Superman would be her best bet as a truly good person, but that option fail. So she tries Option 2 a fellow immortal vandal savage who in her opinion is the darkest of the dark of evil and could possibly be the person to open the box.

Did it not work on Superman because of the whole Trinity debacle?

Too bad Joker's not around, could have given it to him.

Just because Supes isn't totally purely good doesn't mean he's not still a good person.

My first thought was of Equinox, from Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Calling Batman neutral is a bit of a stretch, dickish though he may be, he's a still a basically decent person. Plus he's wearing gloves and has it on a little strap, so he's not really holding it.

I do like the idea of true neutral opening the box though, in which case I feel like it would have to be done by a civilian, someone from outside the spandex set. It'd be great to see the in-fighting, self involved supers get the wind taken out of their sails when the solution isn't all about them.

I've always held the opinion that, in his own way, the person in that preview is more pure than Superman. Mostly because Supes actually has a life outside of his superheroing.

The Endless are neutral, what with being abstract concepts made material and all. They haven't shown up in the DCnU yet have they?

Who the heck is the dude in the red and yellow get-up? Looks kind of like the Bronze Age Sandman.

I thought Underworld Unleashed has long since made it clear that the "purest heart" in the DCU was Billy Baston/Captain Marvel?

Formerly true by default, but the DCnU kind of screwed the pooch there, didn't it?

Hrrm, well no one is purely evil or good, so they'll probably have to go and get Etrigan or something. Whatever happened to him anyway? Last I saw of him in the present day he was buried under a London apartment complex and was accidentally freed by Apollo and Midnighter or something.

Etrigan isn't pure evil, since he is capable of, and has experienced, love, and has a certain interest in humanity.

He'd actually be perhaps the worst demon in the multiverse for the job apart from this guy

So who has the darkest heart in the DC Universe? That's a mystery I'd like to follow.

Maybe Darkseid? Or is he dead by now?

I think he's a solid candidate. I'm creeped out just thinking of his ghost haunting the bottom of the Batcave - it'd make for a nice icebreaker, if any.

Unless NuDCU changed it, and I don't doubt that it could have, Joker used to have a small, very tiny, spark of decency in him too. When he thought Batman had died he went and became a good family man, a loving husband and all that. It still existed when Spectre brought the heroes inside Joker's mind to show that no man was without some goodness inside them.

Oh, yeah, that was the one where he went by Joe Kerr, wasn't it?

So with the Joker out, the question still stands. Which DC character has nothing in them except pure, all-encompassing darkness?

I'm actually more interested to find the answer to that than the other two questions in the betting pool.

Darkseid is the obvious answer.
I'm not sure what the current status of Hell is in the DCU, but folks like Neron & Blaze are certainly candidates. Trigon, too.

With our luck, though, it'll probably be Obsidian....

I'd say Eclipso, but then is he still the Wraith of God/Original Spectre in the New DCU? Because if so, there's probably a bit of good in him somewhere.

Nope. Not anymore. Now he's an evil force from Gemworld's house Diamond that possesses people through their magic. IIRC.

Wraths aren't exactly built for the whole "love thine enemy" approach of New Testament. They're the brimstone and hellfire from Old. So simple association with God doesn't mean that they'd be good. Heck, even the regular Spectre's very being was carved out before being filled with just the literal wrath of God. Leaving room for nothing else. And he's the, moderately, balanced one of the two.

True, but he's unavailable, as he's currently both A) defeated and dispersed and B) trapped in his home dimension of the Gemworld.

In the old DCU this would have been an easy call - the purest of heats=Billy Batson. They even did an entire crossover event (Underworld Unleashed in which the whole gambit was for Neron to get Billy's soul) highlighting this point. But in the new 52.....

Probably the Joker as far as pure evil goes,

Hmm wish you would have put up scans of the of the Shade and Argus agents arguing over Pandora before teaming up.

Pure good suggestions

Tora/Ice?

Stargirl (it is Johns after all...)?

A blue Lantern?

Buddy Baker's daughter?

Pure Evil?

I'd have to say Anton Arcane, even over Joker.

My money'd be on Billy Batson. Although Stargirl seems like a possible pure good choice. It could justify her being in the JLA, I think.

Savage now looks like Didio with a wig.

And my guess is that someone with the purest or darkest heart would be someone whose morality isn't inverted in the Crime Syndicate's universe.

The fact that Ultraman exists means Superman isn't wholly pure.

Someone wholly pure could not be evil in any universe. Someone wholly evil would be evil in any universe.

Or, on the flip side, maybe someone unexpected turns out wholly evil. Like Dick Grayson.

None of the villains in Forever Evil can be wholly evil because they all, even Darkseid, made a choice.

Whereas Dick may surprise them all if it turns out he's always had lingering bad reasons to do good. A distinction between being evil and doing evil.

The most evil person could be a hero who never does harm to anyone. The most good person could be a serial killer or a monster. Like the Joker.

He snapped because his expectations for the world didn't match up with how life actually works and he's intent on showing everyone else the arbitrary gap between what is and what ought to be.

He could be the purest heart in the world for that reason.

Nah. I'm saying maybe the most evil person on the planet is a hero who does good deeds but has some kind of secret dark urges they suppress.

Likewise that the standard Joker could be the purest heart on the planet because all his evil and insanity is actually fueled by failed idealism.

What dark urges? Why would they do such a stupid out of nowhere reveal, after all that backlash for turning Cass Cain evil?

That would require such an extraordinary level of misunderstanding of Dick Grayson's character by every creator involved that it boggles the mind, or an even worse degree of retconning, especially in light of the whole "You could NEVER have become a Talon" sentiment from Bruce to Dick during "Night of the Owls", the quintessential "goodness" of Dick Grayson is a given.

When they did the fairly dire "religious judgement comes to Gotham City" story during the Dick!Bat period they even had to retcon in something into his pre-Robin days (arranging for a never-before-heard-of rival during hsi circus days to be beaten up) for Dick to feel guilty about so he couldn't be judged "pure". That was a cack-handed mess of a story, and using him as an example of the most evil person around would be even moreso.

IMHO of course.

Okay... here is the fun bit: theoretically, what if the Box is given to a child? A kid who's yet to learn & develop a concept of morality?

Then they are neither good NOR evil, since they have no context for the concept, they're a blank slate, not an absolute anything.

Pandora was really cool as a background character, but this series just makes her seem like a really generic action chick. I think they should have layered on the mystery.
