X-Men: Battle of the Atom #1 and All-New X-Men #16

In Battle of the Atom #1, Kitty and the young X-Men go out to deal with a new mutant who is attacking the city when they get attacked by sentinels.

Cyclops and his team arrive to help, and there's really no conflict between the two groups (probably because Beast and Wolverine aren't there to act like assholes), with Kitty thanking Scott for helping.

Suddenly, the young Cyclops is blasted by a sentinel.






Back at the Jean Grey School, the X-Men want to send the young team back to the past when a group emerges from Beast's time cube.




In All New X-Men #16, the X-Men meet the future team. 



Jean gets nervous because she can't read the future team's minds, so she causes a distraction and runs away with the young Cyclops.

You know, I like All New-Xmen. In fact, I was cool with how they brought back Jean.

This event though... this is one of those events that sort of makes me feel dread.

Also, curious when Scott and Emma will get a hold of their now wonky powers (which, I assume will now be more formidable than ever. I dig that Scott can create multiple giant beams and scatter them at multiple targets.).

...I don't know how to feel about this. I'm a giant Jean Grey fan and if she's back, then I will be very, very happy.

This feels like it's going to be a fake-out, though. Like, surprise, it's future Mystique! Or she's going to re-die during the course of this event.

If the event ends and she's back, I will allow myself to be happy. Until then, cautious optimism.

Actually, Rachel, I think the guy who killed your mother was the second to last person to wear that mask. The last person to wear that mask was the one who was the original Xorns brother... or something like that.

...At this point, it's best to just replace all of the nouns, adjectives and verbs in Xorn's backstory with the word "Xorn" and have done with it. It actually paints a far more coherent picture.

This is one of the reasons I'm starting to grow a bit tired of the X-Men side of things. The constant need to grab alternate reality versions and different timeline versions of characters.

Really if they want to do all of that just bring Exiles back, especially for the alternate reality side of things.

I can't recommend Claremont's run enough. The Essential X-Men collections contain some of my favorite comics, including the Dark Phoenix saga. I'm a big fan of volumes 1-5. (They were my lead to comics, so I might be a bit biased.)

I find myself curious about the future disaster they are trying to avoid and how it relates Cyclops.

We already saw that the death of a young X-Man erases that person from the timeline afterwards. Here we see that Iceman, Beast and Jean Grey are running around in that future timeline, so they all had to survive. In addition the grandson of Charles Xavier is there as well. So I assume the catastrophic event mentioned leaves both Jean Grey and Xavier alive and does probably involve one of the young X-Men dying there.

That leaves Angel and Cyclops as options, with Scott being a lot more important for the movement, but one can never be certain.

Anyone else think that it's a bit predictable that Molly Hayes became all huge and musclebound when she got older? I mean, I know that it makes a degree of sense because of her strength, but I thought that the idea was that she was superstrong and tough despite being kind of small, like Toph.

Yeah, the original run of Runaways hinted a lot at Molly's powers being psionic or telekinetic in some way rather than muscle-based so I agree.

You know one of the things I used to like about Marvel more than DC was the Marvel multiverse set up meant you didn't get the wold kill past me to make me vanish thing. Or bad future fades away into nothingness erasing life from existence all across that universe because the protagonist and their home world had a bad out come.

Sure you'd occasionally see references to folks fading from existence in badly written story lines or a changed time line would be restored but sooner or later you'd always see that hey that AU version of the Time line now exist on its own.

So not happy about this at all.

Should I be even remotely surprised that they have given future Beast a new look? Weird to say, I find the answer to be no. Let's hope the look will be consistent for the duration of the story arc.

He does have a habit of mutating. This version reminds me of his counterpart from the Mutant X universe, Brute. He was a mishmash of mutations too (goat/fishman).
Before they specified it was actually him in the scans above and since they'd already mentioned grandkids and stuff I was like "Oh no tell me Beast and Magik don't hook up and produce that guy." I see ram horns, I think Magik. :P

Oh, stop getting bent out of shape over seeing Xorn again, Rachel. The last person to wear that mask may have killed Jean, but the last person to kill Jean wasn't the one in the mask.

The scene where Cyke and Kitty just decide to team up and actually seem to be on friendly terms made me squee. Squee louder and more sqeeful than I've been at a comic for a very long time.

Combine this with Nightcrawler returning and X-23 coming back to the X-Books, I think the X-Men are going to return to being awesome again.
