Damian: Son of Batman #1

We learn more about Damian Batman 666 past and how Bruce Wayne Batman died.














The one big problem I had with this issue is the lack of response from the supporting cast. The comic opens with what should be an earth-shattering event yet Damian is the only character who appears affected by it. I understand that this is his story, but it would be a more compelling one if there were supporting characters that did more than stand around waiting for Damian to talk to them.

Batman is blown up by an exploding fish? I'd really expect a more epic end for him. Actually, I demand a more epic end for him. His Earth 2 end was reasonable.

Next Damian becomes a sullen teenager? Shocking. The only thing I can hope for is that he hooks up with Helena Bertinelli and they go on a villain killing rampage together.

It was decent--in terms of dialogue, it's kind of painfully obvious that Andy is kind-of green at the whole writing thing, but the actual character and plot stuff of it was solid.

I picked up this issue, not sure I'll bother with the second. The art on the faces in particular is very offputting.

Damian's looks like it's trying to separate itself from his head and escape the book in panel 4 of that last page.

I suspect that adolescent Damian is suffering a combination of chronic BO and a session of uncontrollable flatulence, and Alfred is being hit with, if you'll pardon the expression, both barrels, olfactorily speaking.

"Well, I'm sure glad I bought that Villains Month Joker one-shot where Kubert gave Jackanapes an origin story so that I could see him get nearly f*cking decapitated by Damian in a one-panel death scene of his new series!", said precisely no sane humans ever.

It's secretly a plot by Primat to remove every other ape character in DC so she gets more page-time. It will DCs next big event, "Infinape Crisis".

But seriously, I liked all of the Dreambound. They totally deserve their own spinoff, or at least to appear as support characters in another book.

Just imagine it: Detective Chimp in an asylum, rocking himself gently back and forth, repeating ad infinitum "Apes will live and apes will die".

Plus, Jackanape first appeared in that Batman 666 issue of Batman Inc, which this story is supposed to be a direct prequel to. So according to this the character would have been dead at the time of his first appearance.

Unless of course, the writer is about to bring in an ape legacy character, which I would be 1000% onboard with.

Sure, why make teenage Damian different person than when he was 10? Hell, this would be step backwards even for Damian right before reboot.

What is the point of watching Damian becoming Batman, when he already doesn't seem much different than he ends up? Wouldn't it be way more tragic if Damian actually did change a lot thanks to Bat family's influence but Bruce's death would make him once again question the ideals and methods he has embraced? I know this is supposed to be a bad kind of future but this really makes it seem like if all those years were for nothing and Damian never really had a chance to not end up like 666 Batman.

Damian right before reboot was the most developed and "moved on" from his starting point that he'd ever been, mostly because he was still with Dick!Bat, he didn't team up with Bruce!Bat until after the reboot, and that seemed to have set him back significantly (Killing small animals etc)

I kind of understand that. The reboot was (atleast theoretically) introduction of that character to many new readers which haven't seen his character development and if he already made such progress, there wasn't that much space to go from there, without having him age faster to make his growth more natural and just saying that he went threw all that development off panel would propably seem very cheap. I think that if there had to be a reboot (and I still don't think so), setting him back and restarting his character arc under different circumstances was the best option out of really bad ones.

It doesn't appear that in this series Damian ever teamed up with his father.
