"I realised a few months ago that I had one last Who tale left to tell, and this is it, my farewell to the 11th Doctor..." -- Paul Cornell

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show, IDW put out a special one-shot, written by Paul Cornell and drawn by Jimmy Broxton.

A TARDIS accident lands the Doctor in our world, where he's a fictional character.

The Doctor accompanies Ally to a Doctor Who convention...

The Doctor meets Matt Smith:

Yes, it turns out that's a real Cyberman. Trapped in the Void after the episode "Doomsday," it blew a hole to our universe. Accidentally falling through that same hole is how the TARDIS found its way here, as well.

With the aerial attached, the TARDIS is able to send the Cyberman back into the Void.

The story in its entirety is 40 pages long, so this should post should qualify as not surpassing 1/3 of the contents.

The best part was him participating in a best cosplay contest...and coming in second. :D

no doubt based on what happened when Groucho Marx did that

After they get off stage, he's pouting next to the girl and she says, "Well, you really didn't do much--you just pointed at yourself and left." He replies with, "I thought that would be enough!"

And Charlie Chaplin, though he came in last due to the judges knowing it was him, him not being in costume, and his just kind of turning up on a whim while he was in San Francisco.

Sounds quite a bit like John Leeson's story about he went to a con and they had a K-9 impersonation contest.

Really enjoyed this issue. Particularly the part of the Doctor talking with Ally's mother, and being discomforted by being a role model. And of course he gets to be a role model in the end.

It's an obvious concept and the end was a bit cheesy, but I really liked this story. Reminded me why I like the series, and like the Doctor.

I like him offering to the Cyberman to do the sensible thing and leave peacefully with him in the TARDIS.

That was never going to work, leave a Cyberman alone on a planet and we've seen more than once that the only thing they want to do is Cyberconvert the whole place. That IS the logical thing to do.

In a way, Cybermen are just man-sized Nanites. Consume, reproduce, consume, reproduce.

Our reproduction doesn't usually use as many circular saws cutting off one's tender bits. At least I seriously hope it doesn't.

That did actually happen in the comics, he was called Kroton, and he was awesome... and kind of insane by Cyberman standards.

That was only because Kroton retained his ability to feel emotion.

The crew being more impressed with all the money they were saving made me laugh.

Heh, a similar joke was made in an early issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, too. :)

oh, yeah. I liked that too. This one cracks me up even more though because it's a pretty open secret at this point that the BBC is (still) keeping Doctor Who on a relative shoe-string budget and that they're always having money woes.

What a fun story! "Eerie Indiana", Hercules/Xena and Supernatural did the same sort of a plot IIRC, but it's always a good starting point for a story!

My favorite part is where he says:

"Because everyone's not like everyone else. I think it's that way round."

LOVED this!

I don't think I've ever been as fond of a Doctor as I was of the Matt Smith version. And the child like part of me that read this story was like YEAH! Wish that was me LOL! In fact I think I'd actually be afraid to meet Matt Smith in person (Even though I've met folks like Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, William Shatner, Patrick Stewart and so on.) Because I'd somehow be disappointed if he didn't start acting like his Doctor, which of course must be really annoying to an actor.

One moment that really got me in this issue was where the girl starts talking about the one who died, out of his companions. And there's a beat before you realise that she's talking about Elizabeth Sladen's real life passing. And then quite awesomely the Doctor starts saying that no, Sarah Jane is alive and well and still happily chasing adventures in her home town. And it was kind of nice to think, that if we did live in a universe of infinite realities then yeah, there'd be one where she was still living the life of Sarah Jane. That was a lovely moment.

And yeah I did love the 11th Doctor's flabbergasted reactions to not winning the lookalike contest, as I imagine that if they had done this as an episode, (like that epically funny Supernatural one) then that would be exactly the way Matt's Doctor would react!

Issues like this are why I'm sorry that IDW is losing the license. And it did seem like they are genuinely upset about it, as the foreword to this issue sounded quite bitter about it all..

From what I've seen of his outside appearances, Smith seems like a pretty cool guy.

And yeah, it's sad that IDW's losing the license. I haven't read any of the regular series, but I really enjoyed the ST:TNG cross-over and Prisoners of Time. Hopefully Titan does some good stuff with the license soon.

Yeah, he definitely does seem like he is.

I really loved Prisoners of Time and the ST:TNG cross-over too. In fact that's one of the tragic things about them losing the license as they were considering doing a sequel to the Star Trek crossover. There would have been all sorts of interesting story options they could have done there. But alas, it won't happen now.
