aeka: Art by Adam Hughes (Huntress [Helena Wayne]:)
[personal profile] aeka posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Hello! I am actually making a post for the first time since April 2013! (Huzzah!)

The moment many of us have been waiting for has finally happened within the pages of Batman/Superman #8. It took nearly three years for it to happen, but I suppose better late than never.

Putting aside the fact that this story is a continuation of Paul Levitz' 2.5-year-old meandering narrative (which in my opinion is the major flaw with this crossover), I actually enjoyed this issue on its own merits. I mostly loved it for the beautiful art from Jae Lee and the character moments we got between Bruce and Helena Wayne.

Admittedly Bruce is made to look like a colossal shithead in most of this crossover, but I nevertheless enjoyed Helena not dealing with his arsehole behaviour. So much Selina Kyle here. :3

I'm kind-of with you on the whole meandering storyline, but I do like it feels like all that stuff is FINALLY coming to a head. I'm honestly kind-of hoping that once all this stuff is done Levitz will bow out and Pak will take over Worlds' Finest.

But yeah, good stuff with Helena and Bruce--I'm a little disappointed that they never came back to the scene with Helena at Damian's gravesite, where the two almost met.

Are we supposed to hate alpha male types on here? I feel like every other post is screw wolverine or screw batman.

I don't hate on them all the time but they do have a tendency to be very douchey depending on who is writing them, so there are times when it is deserved IMO.

As virtues go, compassion trumps integrity. As a scientist I can get behind it on a couple levels. Firstly we shouldn't forget that altruism is an evolutionary imperative. Also, evolution is now ours to shape. Everywhere we look we're faced with the reality that deep within us lie our evolutionary forefathers, who paved the path for us with dominance (since they're not here to defend themselves, we might as well go ahead and call them murdering rapists). Almost none of it has ever been inherently fair (ask women). But we are masters of nature. It can be what we make it. So is it "right" to hate the notion of the alpha male? If the goal is to better ourselves as a species by phasing it out, arguably maybe. But then Wolverine's primal nature makes this a little problematic, so.

Well that was completely unnecessary.

Kaizen Gamorra. Huh.

I hate the existence of all these Wildstorm characters in the DCU. As someone said before, what made the Wildstorm Universe work is that it was even more chaotic and edgy than Marvel. Now that these characters are in the DCNu, they're all neutered which is insulting to their very conception in the first place (which mind you I prefer to their very existence being insulting to the traditional DC Heroes).

Last time I think I saw him in the DCU was in a Stormwatch storyline where he had a Asian Dr Doom thing going on, mask and all.

The problem with WildStorm is that the Authority, while having decent stories in and of themselves (at least in Ellis' original arcs), sort of upped the ante so that the only stories that ended up getting told were literally world-shattering ones. Even in a universe that's oriented toward big crossover events, you can't really do those too many times. (Really, that's what led to WildStorm crashing and burning, and makes it even more pointless that they got incorporated into the DC continuity.)

Wasn't Power Girl a teenager still when they left "their world". I believe that's what we were told when World's Finest began.

I like the art but oh how I hate that DC's basic reflex is to make Batman act like a jerk to make a story work after the last how many years of Morrison/Snyder humanizing him.

Uncreative names for fictional countries make me sad. No country in Asia actually ends in "Asia."

Malaysia doesn't count because of that pesky Y.

It's gets even worse when you say the name out loud. 'Rheelasia' sounds a hell of a lot like 'Real Asia'. Considering Batman described it as 'a crime infested dump run by drug dealers and gun smugglers', it almost crosses the line into downright offensive, though I'm pretty sure it was just a bad case of 'we can't think of a name' syndrome gone horribly wrong.

It is a pre-established fake Asian country. They mentioned it in Young Justice and everything.

That doesn't make the name any less stupid or uncreative, especially since they had the perfect opportunity to rename it when they rebooted the entire DCU. All it really does is give the writers an excuse to keep it around until the villain-of-the-week takes over and renames it after himself. Although I will admit, having a country named 'New Gamorra' being run by a supervillain is pretty badass. I kind of hope they keep it that way.

I wish they brought Udon Khai from The Ultimate Evil back. That place pretty much fits the bill for what this story wants, minus its chief export being child pornography.

Very nice art but hate the characterization of Batman here.

There's a scene at the beginning of the story where Bruce refers to Helena as 'moving like a Robin', which might have made more sense pre-Flashpoint, but not so much with this universe's fast tracking of the Robin career. I wish instead that he'd noticed that she'd apparently been trained by a Batman and a Catwoman and figured her origin that way. Also not ringing true was Helena's later assertion that it was her mother who taught her to rely on others. That doesn't sound like Selina at all.

New Gomorra...yeah that's a name for somewhere that isn't going to get blown up. Maybe he'll get away on his luxury cruise ship Titan.

Now, who was the Spectre in Nu52? And is he prone to reminiscing?
