Everyone who ever read The Dark Knight Returns knows Supes has come back from worse, as long as there's a nearby field for him to suck the energy out of...
If you read Superman: Brainiac you would see Superman survive a supernova with little to no effects other than being knocked out. Then again he was just beaten to a pulp in this comic, so it's possible that his healing factor was extremely weakened.
Well it was either that, or the entire extinction or enslavement of the human race on Earth. And the beginning of New Krypton under Zod and his god-like minions!
A really good writer can make the dumbest concepts sing. Charles Soule is pretty great, so he actually put some thought into this pairing and try to make it believable in a way that Johns never did.
I don't know if it's so much he never could--he did write some cute moments between the two--but I think because Justice League has to focus on the whole team and he was leading up to Trinity War, that their relationship had to by necessity be put on the wayside.
So...does Wonder Woman do anything for herself in this series? Because every time I see a scan, she's just plain useless until Superman tells her what to do.
She's shown again and again to be a superior fighter, beating Faora one on one and gaining ground against Faora and Zod at the same time. She also showed greater tactical insight.
Just because she can beat things up really well doesn't make her an interesting character. Heck, if those were the standards that make characters great, Alice from the Resident Evil movies would rank as one of the best characters ever created. Sure, she can beat people up, but can she "think" her way out of situations? Not according to these scans.
I'm pretty sure that fighting involves tactics, and beating people up is the name of the game here. That's not thinking your way out of a situation, that's thinking about how to dominate the situation with violence.
Well, a few hours after her big fight with Superman in Sacrifice (lead-up to Infinite Crisis), she used a dunk in molten iron to get the drop on a couple OMACs that were after her. While she still had fresh wounds from Superman, no less.
And she took a nuke in Gail's run, though that was probably just bracers.
Enjoyment or lack thereof is beside the point, to me. The whole of New 52 just has such an AU vibe about it, it's hard to consider that someone might consider this THE universe. ESPECIALLY with things like Earth-2 and Classic Clark and Bruce showing up in Superman/Batman.
I think the AU vibe mostly comes from the fact that the characters personalities are completely warped to the point where you constantly find yourself saying things like "Superman would never say/do that" or "Batman would never be this useless"
Okay, I'll say it--I think this issue totally convinced me that this relationship could work for a while. I was trying to keep an open mind, but this moment really sealed the deal for me.
I also loved how Diana basically pulled a Han Solo on Superman. I just wish that she went ahead and said "I know." Not just to complete the Star Wars reference, but to reference the first time they met.
Looks more skeletal to me, I suspect that the blast has driven out the yellow sun energy from him and he's looking drained and dessicated, a sun bath will probably clear it right up.
