First, Dynamite Comics did a new version of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Now, on the heels of that, they've launched the latest interpretation of Magnus: Robot Fighter.

Russ Magnus is a schoolteacher and martial arts coach in the bucolic town of Maury's Peak. His wife, Moira Oh, runs a robot repair shop.







Suddenly, the town comes under attack by mysterious forces.

Might be the other way around -- robots have been in charge so long humans can ONLY read type, not handwriting. Magnus being able to read that is a giveaway that he's from outside the system.

Makes more sense to me, at least.

I didn't think the word or being able to read it meant anything. I thought it was just a ploy to position his eye for optimal scanning.

Oh, I'm pretty sure the word itself is highly significant - to us, however, not to Magnus or the Robots.

Given the word, I'm guessing the implication is that mankind is actually being controlled by the robots from behind the scenes.

This is actually better than I would have expected.

This looks... promising? Lone heroes rebelling against a dystopia are kind of a dime a dozen, so I do want to see what makes this dystopia, this hero, this story, different.

Also, I'm shaking my head at the inclusion of Frederick Douglass's book. "Look, our character and his situation has thematic ties to slavery and Frederick Douglass! But don't worry, he's still white."

Yes, I'm aware of that. That does not in any way change my reaction to the decision to compare the situation/character to Frederick Douglass.

Mildly interested until I saw the credits, but Fred "Spider-Rape" Van Lente is on the list of writers I actively avoid. Pass.
