There seemed to be some weird art/writing/lettering disjointedness going on this issue. The way Superman's drawn and his speech is lettered, you'd think he was the more injured one, but based on what they're saying and what happens, it seems to be the other way around...? I don't know.
I hope it isn't something as facile as someone not wanting to draw an "ugly" Wonder Woman.
From what I remember at the end of the last one, he used his cape to protect her from a nuclear blast. Which means that there's a really odd disconnect given Superman is understandably fucked up from taking the brunt of a nuclear explosion, but then appears to be relatively healthy by the time they reach Hessia and Diana needs more attention than him. So.. Yeah. Not really sure what's gone on there.
And that in itself is one thing that I was worried about seeing in this relationship with these characters, is Wonder Woman, of all characters, needing to be carried like that by Superman. It really says a lot about how the writer considers the dynamic between the two, I feel.
He's definitely worse off right after the nuke. We see him out cold while she's able to take staggering steps, and the implication is that he would have died if she hadn't managed to use her invisible plane to get some sunlight on him then. After that, some mysterious bad guys blast her.
Looking over the pages again, I *think* the idea is that the combination of WW being blasted and Superman's continued solar exposure is what leaves him in better shape by the end. The problem is it's hard to get that sense because he's consistently and solely the one with the wobbly speech balloons, not to mention the skeletal look.
Hmm. On the one hand, I like seeing the Purple Healing Ray again. And the contrasting medical treatment scene is fun. On the other hand, how does it even work? Like, Diana can't go to Olympus and ask the gods for help, so she gets her friend to... pray to the gods for help? "My sister and I beg your blessing, oh God of Healer, [check list of the twelve Olympians] oh Lord Apollo"?
(Also, I'm a tad ambivalent with the Purple Ray being magical now, and not tech-based. The idea of the Amazons as having its how technological innovations and not being frozen in the Bronze Age is hella unique and interesting, imo)
Although, I like Diana's speech about war and peace. It sounds genuinely like it's from someone who wants to be wise, without coming across as preachy.
Since she identifies herself as a daughter of Themyscira, I assumed that Hessia was praying to the Amazons' divine patron. (I want to say Hera, but that's mostly a guess).
If I get my Wonder Woman continuity correctly, at this point in the timeline Hera should still be depowered, right?
In any case, who among the Amazonian patrons is a god of medicine and healing? I'm pretty sure out of all the deities who appeared in the DCverse so far, Apollo is the one that best fit the bill :P
The artist really hasn't decided what Diana's body shape is, I guess? Take a look at her breasts in the first panel of the first and second pages. Her costume and breast size change dramatically. And on the fourth page, they change again. It's oddly inconsistent: first she's popping out, then she's covered, sometimes they're normal, other times they're much smaller. It's a little distracting.
I was going to ask who did the dance scene and ask they should be the books main artist. In the same way on Harley Quinnthar while Chad Hardwin can draw some Harley Stephanie Rouz more cartoonish style fits the book more.
