This is a one-shot Marvel recently published to celebrate 50 years of Daredevil comics.

"It was outgoing editor Steve Wacker's suggestion to forego an obvious retrospective and instead flash-forward to Matt Murdock's 50th birthday." -- Mark Waid

That night, countless people throughout San Francisco suddenly inexplicably go blind:

Eventually, Matt finds and disables the device causing the blindness, but he exposes himself to its radiation in the process.

Is... is he just taking the dog he already had and expects it to function as a guide dog? Thats... phenomenally stupid. Guide dogs are trained from birth! And you have to train with your dog, you can't just get one and go out into the street!

Other than that, it's quite a sweet story :)

I completely missed that. I love this story even more now. That seems exactly like something Matt would do.

Clint might, but I suspect Matt would be more aware of guide-dogs training than most.

Possibly Lightning is a retired guide dog, and now we know why.

Loved this issue to bits.

Foggy looks to be in the best shape of his life at fifty. Good to see the playing dead act gets dropped after a while.

Very interested in the plot points mentioned here, we all know that the story can't actually go up to the point of his son being born and Daredevil retiring, but becoming mayor and having another Daredevil running around are both things that I'm very interested in seeing. Any guesses as to who his temporary successor might be, assuming it's a pre-existing character?

I don't know, but it doesn't seem like a great choice, given that Matt had to fight to get the identity back, and Foggy won't even say the name.

Ben Affleck would be the natural choice, given how many people are grumbling about him stepping into someone else's shoescowl.

Jackie might be a reference to the DD alternate future miniseries END OF DAYS where *many* of Matt Murdock's ex-girlfriends have red-headed children.

Karl Kesel considered a "Matt becomes for Mayor of New York" story at one point.

Lightning is a reference to the 1980s DD animated series that never got off the ground.

Hmm. I just read "Jackie" as a reference to Battling Jack Murdock, Matt's dad. Was one of the children in END OF DAYS named Jackie?

I will have to reread it but I don't think so. Plus there were FOUR redheaded children in that story.

Jackie seems more likely to simply be named after his grandfather.

I love this issue as a whole, but I got to say: it might just be because of the glowing eyes, but the face Matt makes after he destroys the machine is creepy. Like, having an orgasm right there creepy. And the glowing goo all over his face doesn't help.

" The Purple Children. "

.. the Purple Man breeding as true as Mastermind. There's a thought.

(It's said that every time he fathers a child, a sex offenders' registry ticks up by one.)

He already had a daughter, the purple girl.

Not quite sure what you mean there. Purple Man is a definite sex offender based on how he uses his powers, but his only known child, Kara, as the Purple Girl and later Persuasion, was a heroic member of Beta and Gamma Flight.

I got this mainly because of the Bendis story and because it was a 50th anniversary retrospective (I haven't really been following DD since around the "Shadowland" story) and tbh the main story didn't do much for me. It seemed more like an extended preview for Waid's current run (I.E. the villain being the result of something that Matt does to the Owl that hasn't happened yet, etc).

I think 'End of Days' had similar problems with its ties to Bendis's run (without spoiling anything) and it kind of fell into the same trappings as most future stories (being a series of "where are they now" vignettes hanging over the skeleton of the main story) but IMO that was a more satisfying 'final' Daredevil story.

So I'm guessing the radiation from the device robbed him of his supersenses?
