Why did Bolivar Trask create the Sentinels? Well, there's a theory about that, involving Bolivar's son, Larry. It isn't mine though. Also, a bunch of comic trivia!

We learned some time later that Bolivar Trask had a son, Larry, who was a mutant with the ability to see the future. A big medallion prevented his visions.

The theory, which I can't take credit for, is that Larry Trask's visions are the basis for the "artwork" Bolivar Trask showed. And that Larry's visions were of events in NEW X-MEN's "Planet X" story, when mutants take over Manhattan and turn the humans into slaves before murdering them. Also, the outfits the mutants in the Trask art look like the outfits used by Quentin Guire's Omega Gang on purpose, hinting some kind of "Predetermination paradox" or something.

(One of the newer X-Men series revealed that the first Sentinels were build by Justin Hammer's company.)

Bolivar also had a daughter, Tanya Trask, who could travel in time and wound up founding the Askani with Rachel Summers in Cable's timeline. Cable defeating Apocalyse nullified Cable's timeline (because time travel works that way?) allowed Rachel to "reboot" and appear in the present. Perhaps the same can happen to Tanya. I can't take credit for that theory either.

I wonder if Larry Trask, with his huge medallion, will appear in the next X-Men movie.

Actually didn't Quentin adopt the costume/uniform from Trask's artwork?

But it does make sense, and that still maintains the whole predestination paradox.

Yeah the clothes he and his Omega gang wore were made by the died of an over dose of sentient bacteria mutant fashion designer Jumbo carnation. Who based them on Trask's artwork.

Didn't they retcon those images of the mutant future as coming from the Daily Bugle, since there obviously can't be more than one newspaper in the Marvel Universe?

I really can't see Jonah as signing off on that. He's always been a supporter of mutant rights IIRC, and he personally told Bastion to fuck off.

huh... very intersting analysis... i always felt his dislike of spider-man had very little to do with his journalistic abilities. i mean, when it came to spider-man (because he was terrorized by a masked man early in his career, and hero worship his son) he had an irrational hate for spider-man... but in almost everything else, he had intergrity. hell even when it came ot spider-man, there were times where he owned up to the fact that his hate for him was unfounded. but that he just couldn;t get past it. he admits it's wrong, but can't (0r wont) do anything to change it.

Yeah, barring times when Jonah has let his hatred of Spidey push him to doing some pretty scummy things, Jonah has always been categorized as a pillar of journalistic integrity, and not someone to bend to anyone. Not Super Villains, not the Government, Not organized crime. No one.

He may not be a nice man, but he certainly is a good one.

It depends on the medium as well. JK Simmons' Jonah in the Raimi movies seems to be a straight "I don't like masked vigilantes."

I thought the inspiration for the Sentinels was Bolivar drastically misinterpreting Larry's visions of a future where everyone is enslaved by robotic overlords (Sentinels) for the mutant overlord future.

The "huge, slow-thinking, cruel beast" primitive man model bears a suspicious resemblance to Andre the Giant.

The entire "mutant supermen take over the human race" was actually relatively common, I know Dick wrote a couple of stories on that theme in the 50's (and IIRC he had a publisher who pretty much demanded everyone write that kind of thing)
