"I think it's really insanely stupid to try to shoehorn characters that were created specifically to entertain children with stories of hope and enthusiasm into this hideously cynical, dark, depressing, life-denying tone of voice." -- Mark Waid

The Shroud seems to be Batman meets Moon Knight. This should be interesting.

Looks like the Shroud has gone full Rorschach.

I hope it's not permanent, I liked him as the apparent villain who is actually a hero, but leeps the facade up to keep tabs on other villains. He also had a team of his for a good while, the Night Shift, made up of other oddball sort-of villains who though they were working for a crime boss when they were being used as vigilantes.

Agreed. The Shroud has always been pretty sane and a good guy. He was one of Hawkeye's preferred choices for the WAC after all and he's always been a reliable friend to Spider-Man. He was a dark looking character who was actually pretty smiley and friendly and that was a nice change.

I don't recall how, but wasn't Shroud involved in the whole Shadowlands business? Did he and Matt not meet then?

He was involved, but I don't know if he crossed paths with Matt.

I love that quote from Waid and I agree whole-heartedly. I love this series. I think moving Matt to the left coast was an awesome idea and I hope he spends a lot of time out there, even after Waid's eventual departure from the series.

The thing that I love about Mark Waid's quote is that it goes well in line with his run on Daredevil. It does have grown up or mature elements to it, but it's absolutely not dark or cynical.

I wish more superhero comics were like it.

I like Waid's quote, and it tied into the start of his Daredevil run. Mainly, fans would be a little confused about how... chipper Matt was after Shadowland and everything else. It seems to be a "fake it until you make it" type thing.

Shroud can access the Darkforce Dimension, like Cloak.

I tend to agree with Waid's quote there. Of course, Daredevil has been a pretty dark book (as superheroes go) for decades, too, so there's that.

I'm not clear why Waid is using his DD run to dis the Shroud, though.

I like that Matt knows Owsley *can* be a threat, but is usually more "manageable" than Wilson Fisk. Many "lower-tier" villains can be threats, sometimes.

I like Shroud being positioned as kind being like the old Matt Murdock, a dude on a massive downward spiral, all mopey and angry over lost love, it makes for a fun contrast with Waid's version of Daredevil. I love the over the top squalor he's shown living in too, pulling an old coffee filter out of the trash, complete with cigarette butt in it, is hilarious.

So Shroud is what happens when Batman, Spider-Man, and Daredevil have a threesome then one of them gets pregnant and has a baby. I dig it.
