This actually looks quite good and hardly decompressed at all. For this many things to be happening at once I'd expect two, maybe three issues of a modern comic book. And that's some great Anya.

I wonder if a"Buffy" should have ended after Season 5. Even "Once More With Feeling" had the problem that innocent people died because Xander is an idiot.

he probably knew it was Xander... he was probably alone in his room brooding. Smelled Xander and got all perky, fixed himself up all nice and met him at the door. I actually love the "relationship" they have

He always has done. There's an implication he's his own coachman too in the book, and he serves Harker dinner himself. It's quite a tragic element of the whole thing.

Yeah, forgiving the whole vampire thing, if Dracula can afford to import Armadillos and craft tiny coffins for his pet beetles, then he can afford to hire a doorman and a coach.

He could probably have his brides do anything menial he didn't feel like doing himself, but tasks involving guests might not turn out so well.

I was never sure if the brides could go out in daylight, like he could. You don't see them during the day, but that might just be Dracula not letting them.

Yes, definitely. Season 5 had some serious problems, but it at least had a great conclusion. Season 6 had a good first third and good last third, but the middle third was unwatchable. Season 7 had a good episode, but was otherwise unwatchable. This series should have stopped with season 5, when the title character died.

That is true, but that one episode, considered on its own, was good.

I'm liking this better than season 8, which got a bit carried away with "things we can do in a comic that you can't in a tv show" (hint: some of those things don't belong in either), but it's kinda hard to imagine picking it up again now.

I think the telling thing here is that they're using the creative team from Season 9's Angel and Faith book, which was often better-reviewed than the main Buffy book. Whedon has admitted he went overboard with Season 8, and Season 9 toned that down a pinch, but I have to imagine he's had considerably less input here due to working on Avengers 2... Which maybe isn't a bad thing.

Nice to see the quality of the Angel and Faith team wasn't lost in the transition. I don't think I'll be waiting for library editions this season.

And, no Buffy, Riley was a tool. The tooliest tool in the shed. Seriously, a dude getting jealous of his girlfriend when he looses his Captain America Supersoldier powers, resulting in him returning to vampire pseudo-prostitutes isn't exactly the most healthy relationship I've seen. Even if he didn't have the personality of wet newspaper even before the "my girlfriend's stronger and more capable than me, WAAAHHH!!!" thing going on.

I'll never quite understand the level of dislike that Riley generates.

Buffy fought monsters because it was her destiny. Riley fought monsters because he knew it was right thing to do. That all by itself would be admirable. His relationship was Buffy devolved into an unhealthy one, but the guy WAS going through the equivalent of drug withdrawal at the time, and as ex-military, felt he had something to prove.

After they split, he CONTINUED to fight evil, and found a much happier relationship with his wife..

i don't like his little... let's call it self loathing spell. but i admit, i never thought to look at the drug withdrawl/ex military thing... i mean i should have seen it. but i guess the self loathing was too much....

I never thought Riley was a bad person, just a very uninteresting character who didn't really work in the show. Also, I thought Marc Blucas was a terrible actor.

See, that isn't my problem with Riley at all. MY problem is, he couldn't handle not being the most important thing in her life when her mother had a BRAIN TUMOR. That is grade-A tool behavior, I don't care what he was trying to prove.
