Avengers World #9: Sam & Bobby's Excellent Adventure

To sum up: Cannonball, Sunspot & Smasher were sent on a mission to investigate what was happening on A.I.M. Island after it appeared to be evolving. The trio were captured, and Smasher was forcibly transformed into (The very Yellowjacket looking) Messenger. The rescue team failed, leaving Sam & Bobby in A.I.M. custody.

Maria Hill, however manages to contact them & give them a new assignment: Since Future A.I.M. are sending Future Tech back to Present A.I.M. which is the reason behind what happened to the island, Sam & Bobby need to go to the future & cut off the source.


Being that boys will be boys, and that his time travel logic dictates that they can take as long as they want to complete their mission since they'll return to the point they left, Bobby manages to convince Sam to go to a bar instead of completing the mission. That hired Solomon Grundy as a bartender.




Future Jocasta steps in & pulls the boys from their bar fight, putting them back on the mission. However, she argues they can't just stop everything A.I.M. were going to do from happening, but she can give Sam & Bobby what they need to stop them when the time is right. However...


"Now what, you boys might ask yourselves, could have convinced these Avengers to agree to such an agreement? What could S.H.I.E.L.D. possibly have offered that made them say yes?"

Man! How many future-kids does this make for everyone, now? Storm has Azari here, Kymera, and it looks like four from "Black to the Future" (overlap is possible, but that's at least two more). You'd better step up your game, Cyclops!

I tried counting the various alternate kid numbers once and gave up before I even finished Scott and Ororo's . I mean how do you count them. I mean do you count each alternate version you've seen cause if we do that Scott wins by a land slide. If we count just one of each shown then I think Ororo has a slight edge.

Yep next Avengers Heroes of tommorrow AKA the movie where Thor was a dead beat dad who left his daughter on a conquered Earth. The other heroes at least had the excuse of being dead.

I always assumed it had something to do with either her mother (who I never thought was Sif) or whatever it was that pulled him away (if it was a strictly one way trip, for example, he might see leaving her behind and the lesser of all evils.

Yes, during the Bendis/Romita Jr. run on AVENGERS Volume 4 that started in 2010. It involved time travel and a cave wall with a LOT of notes about future Marvel Events.

IIRC about as much as any other glimpse of possible future stuff. Some hints while the same writer was doing the book but then nothing.

Yeah but that was only a possible future. This seems to imply they either exist in or will exist in 616 which is a confusing mess but that's normal for Hickman's stuff.

That's a shame, given the DVD movie I thought they were quite a fun team, once you overlooked the "Thor doesn't talk to his daughter for years because of reasons" bit.

Okay, I think I'm getting a little mixed up with those last two scans. Is Future!Jocasta saying that the Secret Avengers, a team that was formed and disbanded in the recent past, was sanctioned because SHIELD was holding the future kids hostage/offering the kids protection from some outside force? So are the future kids supposed to have already been alive at that point, or is she referring to a future incarnation of that team?

I feel like I've missed something.

Future Jocasta is simultaneously in the future and the present somehow, separate from present Jocasta. SHIELD recovered her. It's not entirely clear but I think SHIELD has been using her knowledge of the future for their own purposes, kinda like how AIM is currently using future technology to jumpstart the present. From what I can tell the Next Avengers are somehow in danger in the future and SHIELD used knowledge of these children and that their lives/future are in jeopardy to convince Hawkeye, Mockingbird and Black Widow to join the team.

Wait... isn't the Next Avengers based on the Lionsgate animated continuity where Cap and Widow are together? Wouldn't it make more sense for the 616-future version of Cap be the son of Bucky and Natasha?

Was that Next Avengers (or whatever it was called) movie really popular enough to bring the kids from it into the comics? The only things I heard about it were people complaining that it wasn't the Young Avengers. (Because seriously, that would be awesome.) Didn't see it myself, so I can't judge.

Personally, if I was going for future Avengers kids, I'd go for the ones from What If: Battleworld. There were some fun pairings there. (Hawkeye and She-Hulk had a kid! So did the Human Torch and the Wasp!)

I liked it, and am excited to see them show up in this book.

But I never put much stock into the "why aren't they using these other characters?" arguments. They clearly wanted to tell their own story with their own character bits, and using preestablished characters with preestablished character notes would get in the way.

Honestly, it would massively impractical to use the Battleworld kids anyway. (The backstory relies on a bunch of different things that didn't happen in current continuity.) It'd just be nice to see them again, since I don't think they've appeared since that one What If. If they did show up, it'd have to be in an Exiles style story.

I don't really have anything against the Next kids.
