MTV have been given first look at these character bios for the cast of the forthcoming "Gotham Academy" series.

Which sounds like it might be fun!

Varied cast, different angle on Gotham, a touch of Paul Dini's live action series Tower Prep.... yup, I think this is worth a peek.

Just as long as it's not "Gotham High". That had some great design but looked awful.

So basically: Draco Malfoy, Padma Patil, Luna Lovegood, Cho Chang and Blaise Zabini?

You can only get away with the "I'm not answering this part" gag very very sparingly, and it kinda bugs me that the "questionnaire" changes from student to student, as if the paper itself is sentient and thinks "eh, I bet THIS student would have a more interesting favorite book than favorite band!" (I know it's a cute character-establishing device, but c'mon).

But the designs are very good and give us information even when the text is being coy. Bottom line, I'm intrigued enough by the characters that I'll overlook my nitpicks about their presentation here.

Listing Constantine as your hero is a good way to get killed by a demon halfway through a Hellblazzer arc.

"The Diary of Millie Jane Cobblepot"

I would like to know what this is.

I'm still oddly not sold, though: it seems like they created this wonderful world of characters and ideas, but once everything was done, some editor broke into the brainstorming room, took a marker and wrote "BUT IN GOTHAM!" all across the drawing board.

Tentative.

I think that's the entire point, though. I don't think this series would necessarily need to exist without the 'IN GOTHAM' bit because that's the entire point. It's incredibly rare we get anything from a teen's perspective in Gotham - or at the very least, ones that aren't associated with Batman and thus biased to his point of view. So to have this set in Gotham is, to me, the major selling point alongside the creative team, who are two of my favourite creators on their own, nevermind working together.

It's about teen students in Gotham. That's a pretty solid pitch right there, and it's what is gonna differentiate it from every other teen-starring series out there.

The pitch is good, what I'm concerned about is the execution - I'm afraid there's not gonna be a good balance between characterization, plot, and humor. Imagine a Family Guy episode made of nothing but cutaway gags.

In any case, DC needs to take extra care getting this out, because I think this (plus Nu!Batgirl and Gotham by Midnight) is a test case for DC's future direction, which is probably why they put all these on the Bat-books first instead of scattering it across the line.

There's probably a lot riding on this, which is why I'm concerned.

"I'd just pretend it was some sort of skit show."

Which is the kind of thing that I'm afraid Gotham Academy might end up being: a 32-page compilation of meta-oriented comedy moments that are just exactly - and only - that.

...Wait. Wait, actually I might have talked myself into reading this one.

I'm actually bothered by them having different questionnaires, too.
But hey, siblings! I'm going to check this series out only for them because I'm shallow like that.
