So aside from Miles Morales being Spider-man, does anyone know what's been going on in the Ultimate universe? Captain America's still president I guess? I have absolutely no clue. Let's just take a quick peek at
I don't really feel right calling the art bad.... But it definitely wasn't right for this book. Ultimate FF should have had a slick, modern pop art feel, but instead it got this weirdness.
It looked especially bad in comparison to the pitch perfect covers that the first few issues got, which suited the series far better.
I just got caught up on the series through to the end and agree with you wholeheartedly. Ultimate FF should have been a chance for the Ultimate Universe to head off in a brave new direction, but instead it wound up being weird and not very good.
Thor and Captain America are dead. Sue Strom and Tony stark crated a think tank to replace the Ultimates called the future foundation where this series is from, Jessica, Kitty Pride, and Miles co-opted the Ultimates name for their street level teen team.
FF just got cancllled and its rumored that the Ultimates are gone next year. At this point the ultimate universe is like Earth-2 where the planet has gone through so mch devastation that i'm unsure how it keeps life.
My guess is the Incurions and time running out will kill the Ultimate universe with all the good stuff like Miles being thrown over to the 616 relaunch.
Aw jeez, I hope All-New Ultimates doesn't get canned, I love that book. The stuff that Michel Fiffe is using to construct his little corner of the universe is stuff that we don't see riffed on the nearly as often. I mean, a gritty version of Iron Man, we've seen that a hundred times, but fucking Schreck? That's new.
Ultimates is the freshest and most vibrant that the Ultimate U has felt in years, and it doesn't have the love it or leave it pacing that Bendis' work suffers from. Plus it doesn't feel like a teen book being written by a middle aged man, which is a pretty big advantage as those things go, in making it feel modern and honest.
I really don't think Miles and the other good elements of the Ultimate U will folded be into the mainstream universe. First of all because people have been predicting it for years and it hasn't happened yet, so it's kind of a Chicken Little situation as far as I can tell, and second because it would defeat the point. Having them as multiversal refugees would ruin the grounded approach, and just retconning them in would render them irrelevant.
Plus I don't think there's all that much to be gained from shifting them into the 616, Miles would be even more overshadowed than he is now, and isn't going to bring in many readers if he just gets demoted to being Spider-Teen or something. The most folding them in might do is piss of Bendis by ruining his sandbox, and I don't think Marvel wants to do that.
My thinking is that so long as Brian Bendis sticks around at Marvel and wants to do Ultimate Spider-Man, both that title and by extension the Ultimate Universe will be sustained purely by Bendis' star power.
With that I mind I think Marvel might as well just keep using it as as testing ground for new concepts and creators that they don't want to drop into the mainstream universe untested.
I could see all of the Ultimate titles being cancelled and USM being the sole remainder (kind of like Spider-Girl and the MC2) with Bendis keeping it alive by sheer force of will.
Exactly. I mean it's already the only book that's consistently come out, it's very much the centerpiece of the Ultimate Universe. Marvel might as well leave it in place and keep trying out new concepts around it to see what sticks.
