Fables 143 -The return of Super Ozma, and Babe the Blue Ox-

Okay time for a break from Spider-Woman... We will see the conclusion of the origin battle soon, but right now I want to share something adorable from Fables... and Super Ozma... cause Super Ozma is awesome.







Of course we already know the answer to that, it's Ms. Douglas, who is trying to steer Bigby away from Snow at Fabletown and onto the farm so he can kill his cubs.

Aw, poor stupid oddly Jack Kirby-ish dude. He's just made the same mistake everyone makes before attacking Bigby.

That's Beast, so he has tangled with Bigby before briefly... but now he is no longer the beast, since that passed onto his daughter.

Also I'm assuming the Kirby-ness is intentional. When Pinocchio assembled the original super team, he was going for certain comic book archetypes.

I do like the idea that Pinocchio would try to exploit the superhero archetypes, considering one could say that superhero stories are modern-day fables.

I think honestly it had more to do with him being a fanboy... he did try to sell Ozma on the concept by convincing her that the faith of all the children who believed that super heroes could never loose would aid them in the fight against Mr. Dark. That sold Ozma, but she cut Pinocchio from the team, who had cast himself as basically Professor X.

He also did try to mack on Ozma a bit, and she made it VERY clear that wasn't wanted.

I'm a bit surprised Ozma would choose to keep the costume, and use it now. But I guess it was too good of an idea to let go.

You do realise the Bigby's lost fights a few times throughout the series, his Father, Goldilocks, the Emperor and Prince Brandish.

I really want the next page of Babe's comic to be a two-page spread of the entire room they're in being sucked into a black hole while Babe screams "You fool! You've doomed us all! Why didn't you just leave the book alone? WHY?!?"

Grant Morrison seems to be snagging that approach for Multiversity.

And as the series lumbers towards its end, Willingham seems determined to break our hearts and squander our good faith by doing horrible things to many characters. Because unless there's a surprising twist, there's not exactly a lot of Happily Ever After for a lot of these people.

Poor, poor Thrushbeard. His fable's relative obscurity doesn't bode well for his return. Same with Weyland Smith. He got lucky once when Flycatcher brought him back, but...

It's all gonna end in bloodshed, tears, and regret, isn't it?

The Ox at the End of This Book: Starring Lovable, Furry Old Babe!

I'm confused (I basically gave up on the title when they killed Dare - though I loved it for years). The Oz story is ended right. It was the flying monkey who saved Oz and there's peace there - so what is Ozma (aka girl princess/empress of Oz) doing still hanging out here? Why hasn't she gone home? Has this ever been explained?

thats a good question, it can be assumed that she just up'd a left, and may very well not be welcome back... The flying monkey saved Oz so they might not see Ozma as rightful heir to anything now. If they're at peace her presence may not be needed.

But this is all conjecture, no concrete answer yet i think, i've been in and out of the fables comics too, to be honest.

Or maybe she just feels at home here now...

She may very well go back at the end.

The previous arc rather implied that a lot (most?) of the Fables would be going back to the Homelands and that would be the end of Fabletown...

and a major thing I didn't include from this issue, was that Bigby's leaking of wild magic has made the Fabletown castle visible to Mundy eyes.

As for why Ozma hasn't gone back, she isn't aware that the Nome King's been defeated is she? I mean now that they have access to the mirror again (or at least should per the FAIREST IN THE LAND trade, but I don't recall seeing in the main book) she very well could have found out, but I think maybe she's been just dealing with one crisis after another since then, she might also feel her obligation as current head witch is too important, if she knows Oz is getting along without her at the moment.

Dpesn't she have responsibilities in Fabletown? She tookup the role of sorceress in chief from Frau Totenkinder IIRC, and that's not something you walk away from I suspect.

Yeah, like I said she's head of the 13th floor witches, so returning to Oz might not be top priority while we've still got multiple threats on the mundy world... But I expect if she survives, she will head home at the end of the story, since that seems to be the point.
