Oscar and Zatanna travel through her extradimensional mansion to see if the place's enormous magical library has some means of turning Hempel back into a regular human.

While this is going on, the Charles Manson-esque cult leader turned occult gangster Brother Midnight has woken up from his coma... and it's not a pretty sight.
Back with Zatanna, she's decided to see whether Oscar/Stringleshanks has been honest with her, because she's not an idiot and realises that he might have been lying through his teeth this entire time.

He talks about how, back in 1955, he was taken in by an elderly Italian couple who taught him how to make and perform with puppets. They were good, but refused to take their act on TV due to it "corrupting" their artform... so Oscar drugged their wine, stole their puppets and burnt their house down while they were asleep.
After that, his story from before was pretty much true. He had the standard wise and eventual fall from fame... only the stage manager had actually found Oscar in the midst of robbing the place. After all, as Oscar says, he didn't know how long he'd be in business again, so he needed every cent he could get his hands on. When the guy tried to stop him, he cut his throat, and was planning to do the same to Zatanna before her dad showed up.
The revelation of just how much of a bastard Oscar is causes her to get loose control and yell at the puppet, threatening to turn him into something worse... only for Oscar to take the opportunity to yank the crystal loose and smack her in the face with it. Evidently he was able to do what Zatanna said would be impossible due to just how desperately he wanted his old life back.
He runs over to Zatanna's magical tool cabinet after beaning her in the head with the crystal again, and grabs a bunch of the things inside seemingly at random. Despite her warnings that the magic contained within those artefacts being corrupted, he just grabs an armful of them and uses them to wish himself human again... sort of.
Turns out that the mixture of random magical things combined with Zatara's original spell leaves Oscar kind of wedged between human and puppet, unable to be fully one thing or the other... and liable to explode from the internal stress. Zee tries to contain the magical explosion... sort of.
