Eh, just sprinkle some blood on her and she'll be fine.

I read a lot of the Futures End tie-in issues and to my surprise, a lot of them ended either on a happy (The Phantom Stranger and Harley Quinn) or bittersweet note (Batwing and Supergirl). I assumed the worst and was pleasantly surprised by the experience...

...but this issue was the only one I read that was depressing. Seriously, almost everyone died in the end after Batwoman became evil and her sister was forced to kill her to stop her rampage. Thank god this isn't the end for the character, but just a possibility. Either way, what a frickin downer.

It's pretty reasonable though. Occupational hazard and all, you have to wonder, how did she think this would all end? She dresses up as a bat and goes out fighting demons and assassins at night, her will's probably kept up to date. She's probably not anticipating wedding days and children's graduations.

RIP, tragic future Batwoman. You earned it. You were awesome.

Isn't this the exact same premise as one (several) Batman Elseworlds story(yes)? Except there (one of them) Batman got to be all Byronic and shit struggling with his vampire bloodlust and stuff, much more interesting.

I dunno, I guess only dude characters get to be Byronic.

I expect you're thinking of Batman: Red Rain, and its sequels, Bloodstorm & Crimson Mist.

I guess that once they screwed over her character and drove away the creators who founded the title, the fridging was pretty much inevitable, eh?

At least it isn't canon

They could have at least been apologetic about robbing us of the story we wanted in favour of having Kate be raped by a vampire. If they're not willing to have Kate be married and a superhero they could at least have one book say they get back together and have a happy ending. Instead the rapist has turned her into a monster, and her sister had to put her down like a rabid dog. That's just a massive "Fuck you!" to everyone who was once a fan of this comic, before they ran it into the fucking ground.

Wait, what? Rape? So she isn't even vampire as villain, she's vampire as dehumanized victim?

Did that come off like I'm surprised? Because I ain't.

The relationship started with the vampire sneaking into Kate's room and hypnotising her into submission when she woke up thinking it was Maggie, so yeah, the characterisation of this as rape seems accurate. There are a number of ways you can write a vampire and not have them come off as a rapist, but this isn't one of them.

I'm not saying I disagree. I've just been burned by DC so many times recently I find it hard to care anymore

I admit, as depressing as this ending was, I felt oddly indifferent because DC had already hobbled (and given when I read of the recent vampire storyline - possibly damaged ) the character and now the title is on the chopping block. -_-

Yea, DC's really good at making readers reach that point of not-caring.

I miss the old days when they'd quietly move characters they didn't want to support off stage so that they could be brought out as needed.

The Batwoman issue of Future's End is actually one of the only such issues that I picked up out of genuine enthusiasm and curiosity: Vampire Batwoman on a team with Etrigan, Clayface, and Ragman sounds like bonkers fun, and I took it to be a goofy diversion from the main series.

The actual issue struck me as more disappointing than offensive, probably because I'm not invested in the character, but I was definitely shocked to discover that the main series is actually following along with this direction, which is a huge and not altogether advisable departure from what Batwoman has been in past years.
