Zombies... Miracleman killing his former sidekick... Identity Crisis... it's been a fairly harrowing series of postings lately...
And whilst those have, for the most part, been good powerful stories... more or less.... well... less in a couple of cases IMHO, but that's neither here nor there, it's time for another change of pace.
Alan Davis is akin to comfort food for me, his art is sleek and vaguely cartoony in the best sense, and coupled with the right writer (Chris Claremont, Mike W. Barr or himself, amongst others) produces awesome results. I've posted New Mutants Annual #2 in the past, as well as X-Men Annual #10, but this remains a favourite)

Thos who saw my post earlier in the week will recognise the green guy, anyone who knows the New Mutants will know who the other guy is.
As two shapeshifting aliens set out to prove, once and for all that;
"Anything YOU can Do!"
We open with one of my favourite pieces of art ever, and whilst I had to cut it because it's a splash page and I need the pagecount here. However, on an unrelated note, if one were amble over to my CAF page and just casually take a look around, you might come across the original art. It's not mandatory of course, just a completely unrelated observation... (I might get Mod Note'd for that... possibly by myself)
Anyway, we open with Doug Ramsey in his element, using all the tech of the Danger Room to come up with a suitable training session for his team, the New Mutants, well those who arent actively ill (I love that it's something as mundane as the flu which keep Magma and Karma out of the story)

Look at that happy little dude! He's spouting pure Claremont-ese ("Li'l Bobby-buddy"? Trust me, even in the 1980's NO ONE spoke like that) but never mind...

So we get theYoung Teen Avengers 20 years early! I suspect that whilst Kitty was a find programmer in her own right, the Danger Room programs got a WHOLE lot whackier once Doug joined the school (There's a Wolverine "Choose-Your-Own-Adventure" book which has Doug setting up a program for Wolverine which includes the Blues Brothers as the opponents... Logan is impressed by the attention to detail, though he makes a note to ban Doug from late-night movies :) )
Hi-jinks ensue... which alas I have to cut back to very little, two scenes stick in the mind....

Bobby, being Bobby, regrets having to render a girl (especially a gorgeous one) unconscious and that the real She-Hulk is "so old" because he thinks she's "my kind of girl" sigh... that boy is one big walking hormone.

Cap being all chivalrous, to a fault, is rather sweet.
Whilst this has been going on, something has been approaching the Earth, something big...
The New Mutants ultimately win though the team leaders (Sam and Dani) suspect that Doug went a little easy on them...
And the "thing" arrives and the Danger Room goes on the fritz (though for once, not dangerously). The team think it's Doug playing around with things again...

It's a honking big spaceship... seriously... it's HUGE! (Check out those expressions above, especially Sunspot's! (and Doug's in the next panel!)
They have a guest...

They quickly outline the last time he visited (In a previous X-Men Annual which I have somewhere I think) where he set in motion a Scavenger hunt where the objetcs to be collected included
Nick Fury;s eyepatch
The Black Queen's costume
ALL the Wasp's outfits
The Incredible Hulk's pants
... well you get the general idea.
Dani is quite clear though...

This can only end well... especially as it dissolves into Warlock and Impy engaging in schoolyard taunts before vanishing in a puff of argument.
The gang follow, using Magik's scrying pool in Limbo to idenitfy them, but since they don't want to show their faces in what might be an embarassing situation, they descide to dress the partj

These are the outfits they got in the previous years X-Men annual, though Magik has switched from a white outfit to a red one.
The pieer is due for demolition so there's no real concern about property damage, but the kids try to sort it out before it gets out of hand... it's way too late for that though,

Next stop is Brazil, and one of my all time favourite Cypher panels....

Their attention is drawn to a commotion on the beach and they find something they definitely hand;t expected.

Is it me, or does Doug seem more than a little.. awed by his selfsoulfriends new look?
The display is disrupted by an unceremonious dumping into the ocean, which washed Impy's bodypaint off, and disrupted Warlock's human mimcry, so it's declared a draw.
Next stop.... Wimbledon.

And then a detour to the site of the then current location of Forbidden Panet London (It's moved twice since then).

It comes to a head to head...

There's a stop in Russia I won't go into, but Illyana and Doug have to do some fast apologising in Russian.
Things finally come to a head when they go grandé size as Godzilla and Marvel's own kaiju hunting giant robot Red Ronin,
And it's here that we see Doug display his defintie second power, a grasp of the obvious, which is rarer than you'd think in some comics//

Impy has to admit defeat because the one thing he cannot do, despite beng able to take on any appearance, is change his colour.
So all's well that ends well, with Impy promising to set right any damage he's caused, and then...

I believe it would be apt to end this with a suitable "Waaah-waaaah-waaaaah-waaaaaaaaah!"

He really is the most top tier guy in all the Marvel universe just about.
Also Magneto at the end:
Magneto: ROBOT HOUUUUUSE! I mean NEW MUTAAAANTS!

Date: 2015-02-09 06:02 am (UTC)I also always loved most of the "graduation uniforms" for the New Mutants, and I was really sorry that they didn't get more use. (In fact, some of the outfits they got once Bret Blevins and Louise Simonson came on the title were horrible...) Though 'Berto's uniform here is.... a pink mask, really?
