scans_daily It begins in the Princes of Darkness storyline in JSA, where Obsidan, Eclipso and Mordu (unrelated to the bear from Brave) team up to blanket the work in eternal darkness. Stargirl and Captain Marvel are swallowed by the dark, which has been absorbing and cutting off all non-darkness related magic as it expands...
Next issue the pair continue to wander through a shadowy, seemingly empty NYC looking for Alan Scott, who was swallowed along with them.
After stumbing across Jade and Obsidan's mother (who apparently had been absorbed into the Shadowlands by Obsidian some time before), the pair keep walking. They muse for a brief time whether Obsidan's abusive foster father is about here somewhere (Jade and Obsidan's bio-mum had a split personality who gave the pair up for adoption, Jade lucked out with a good family while Obsidan's was hellish, leading to him absorbing the abusive parent into the Shadowlands earlier in the story), and kill some time by discussing Billy's powers.
The Shade, for those who are late to the party, is an immortal shadow-controlling character that was originally an enemy of the Golden Age Flash, before getting a heavy overhaul in the pages of James Robinson's excellent Starman series. Basically he's a guy whose been around for so long, he effectively became a supervillain because he thought that it'd be fun, and by this point was now in the morally ambiguous antihero side of things.
As a bonus kind of deallie, here's the Shade's reappearance later in an Infinite Crisis tie-in issue of JSA, in which he's now acting in a more traditional superheroic role in his adopted home of Opal City.
Later, after some weird business at the Liberty Bell, the Shade appears to give Courtney some bad news. It seems that her bio dad (her mum remarried, and her sidekick/mentor is the superhero STRIPE) died in that explosion back in Opal.
Man, I really should post some Starman at some point... or some more Marvel Family stuff.
Eh, I'll split the difference and post the time that Mary Marvel teamed up with the Mist next.

Date: 2015-03-25 02:31 am (UTC)As for Billy/Courtney, they were my favorite couple to come out of JSA (more than Hourman/Jessie Quick) and I never liked how they were short-circuited when Billy was pulled out of the book (to be put...NOWHERE else...same old DC) and because Johns (who was the man who wrote Billy/Courtney) was fixated on Stargirl/Atom Smasher as a future coupling (literally as is it was predestined in the future because one panel in one comic had future Courtney married to Al) and that was much more squicky than Captain Marvel/Stargirl which was actually kind of sweet - and you couldn't get any better two teenage role models as heroes so it made sense.
