Countdown to totally awesome Daredevil Red Suit cosplay begins... now. I can just see fans wearing that snazzy little number. I want him to add a red trenchcoat for bad weather.
And then I want to see Red Suit Matt Daredevil Murdock team up with White Suit Mr. "Moon Knight" Knight and fight crime as the best dressed vigilantes in the world.
I wonder about the possibilities of a miniseries based on this premise, with superheroes amalgamating their secret identity with their careers. Dr. Strange being a kind of benign cross between Aliester Crowley and Oliver Sacks, for instance, or Captain Carol Danvers using her outstanding military record and intergalactic diplomacy skills to advocate for human rights, or some such.
Heck, I'd write this one - Curt Connors and Sergei Kravinoff as a David Attenborough/Ray Mears team up like you've never seen. Every episode, Curt turns himself into the lizard and immerses himself in a cryptoterrestrial environment like the Savage Land or the Mole Man's kingdom. Sergei hunts him down on camera, wrestles him back to humanity and then they analyse the footage together after.
This would AMAZING as a dream sequence on the Netflix series. But just a dream sequence. Netflix seems to be going for the "Matt Murdock: Super Emo" phase of the character.
Well, that was sort of where he was a before Waid got on (everyone around him dies, got possessed and went evil, it was probably a Monday, ect.) in my opinion.
yeah. lots of people may raise an issue anytime a superhero movie/show goes for the dark and gritty but...that's pretty much Pre-Mark Waid Daredevil... Can't really blame the show for that one.
Yeah, between the Netflix series and the post-Secret Wars relaunch I fully expect Daredevil to get plunged back to the grimness of its Bendis era, unfortunately.
At this point I'm mostly just curious how this series will close out, given how far it's diverged from what came before. It might be more practical to simply let Waid conclude things his own way and then do a soft reboot, rather than awkward attempting to restore things to how they used to be.
Well, Arrow didn't really damage the Green Arrow book until they let the writers on the show take over the book (and it at least came with some interesting moments and ideas). It did influence the comic before that, but not overly harmfully (in fact the focus on his origin on the island, the introduction of Diggle, and a few other points they took were quite interesting to read).
Of course, Marvel are more willing to do synergy than DC are, so it does look like they'll probably do that, unfortunately.
To be fair, most of the damage comes from the comic suddenly using something clearly rejected from the show on account of being crappy, and bringing over the show's resident Creator's Pet Mary Sue.
I think a big part is that the guys are clearly better at being show-runners/plotters rather than writers. The plot they had wasn't that bad in concept, but execution is the main problem. That and the fact the main villain was clearly meant to be Malcolm Merlyn (or at least, was so eerily similar he sure looks like such). As for Felicity, it probably doesn't help that what made her likeable in the first season (before they over-forced her without giving her any depth) was mostly due to the actress's delivery, making her fall rather flat when brought in.
At least 'Arrow' is thought to be good by many (myself included). We don't know (at the moment) about the quality (or lack thereof) of Netflix's Daredevil until the show comes out.
Frank Miller had an (apparently) great run on Daredevil, so maybe this series will be as good should the tone change. I hope said tone does not at the moment, though that's because I'm scared of uncertainty and the unknown.
Shoes: it's San Francisco, I'm sure you can find those (or a small shoemaker shop willing to do a custom job, even) there. And we might as well wonder where he was getting his boots before the change. ;-) Also, an Ellis/Waid-penned Moon Knight-Daredevil story would be fantastic.
Regarding suits, they have their moments and there are practical issues, true (the same could be said of several heroes' costumes, however).
But "badass in a suit" does fit Matt well, I think, and it's good to see him embracing both sides of his life and bringing them together. Moreover, SanFran is confirmed as the place where heroes -are- welcome.
Sure hope Reed Richards made him some sweat-proof fabrics then.
That's an interesting idea, that on the east coast superheroes make a big deal about themselves and started a civil war over it, and on the west coast people just think superheroes are "meh. Whatevs."
That's what instable molecules are for, right? :-) Jokes aside, it is always refreshing to see a modicum of variety within the Marvel U about the way people view heroes.
For additional examples, Kamala Khan /Ms Marvel hailing from Jersey City also comes to mind, as does Kaine's tenure as Scarlet Spider in Houston.
I've looked in to this pretty thoroughly in the past. With Marvel anyway. All those heroes on the east coast. Who is taking care of Chicago and Detroit? If you're from Chicago, there's a 95% chance you've been stabbed. Where's OUR Spider-Man? And Philly! Don't even get me started. You can be shot for standing on a street corner. There's some serious disproportion here.
My headcanon is that each city has its own groups of heroes (which is at least canon after the 50 state initiative came in), with the bigger, more high-profile ones just being the New York and California-based heroes. Sorta like how every country has its own group of superheroes, but we only see the American ones because they're the ones with the biggest profile.
I'd actually assumed he was just using the boots from his old outfit, there are no laces and if you look at the splash panel of Dardevil fighting the Matador, they're definitely boots.
Am I the only one who finds this a bit to hipstery and thinks this is a jump-the-shark moment? Please tell me this is just a dream sequence, because Matt really seems to be acting out of character.
No more hipstery than Batgirl, Spider-Woman, Hawkeye, or other 'comics are fun!' takes, if I'm honest; there's some hipsterness to them, but its still entertaining and enjoyable to read.
I mean it's "hipster-y" in that he's wearing a hip outfit. But it's not being esoteric, aloof, patronizing and superior based on superficial things like taste in clothing, and insecurely wrapping your identity up in it. Which is what I think people really mean when they brandish the term "hipster" against anyone in plaid or trying for a style (I don't really understand when people criticize other people for caring about their appearance)
I found this enjoyable, but I do think Daredevil is supposed to be acting kind of out of character, reveling in his celebrity status and cocky and being more than a little cocky. Honestly as fun as it is, I definitely read this issue as the buildup to some sort of fall for the character, and I don't think stylish suit Daredevil is meant to be the status quo.
I wanted to hate this SO MUCH when I read this. I love Daredevil and his classic red suit. To change it seems like sacrilege.
But dammit all if Waid doesn't make it work and make sense within what he's established in this series.
I know it won't happen, but I want Waid to keep writing this series forever. Sadly, I know he's starting to begin the road to the end. And I feel like many David Tennant fans: I DON'T WANT HIM TO GO!
I enjoyed this issue quite a bit, but I don't believe this is actually supposed to become the status quo as some people seem to be suggesting. We've already seen flaws in Matt Murdock's "fake it 'til you make it" approach to mental health and I think this is intended to be the culmination of that plot thread, as he acts more and more frivolous and cocky. Just look at his facial expressions, that smug expression isn't something that you tend to see a hero sporting unless it's about to get wiped off their face.
It's a certainly a fun issue, but I think this is buildup to having things come crashing down. As bright as much of the Waid/Samnee era has been, they also haven't shied away from darkness, they've just dealt with it differently.
