Yeah, the more I read back on it, the more examples I realize supporting the fact that his early Ultimate works all followed the exact same formula of taking one criticism of the 616 version and then making it the Ultimate version's defining trait. You can trace all of his Ult creations from Cap, Iron Man, Logan, Magneto, Pym, and Namor here to some kind of perverse logic of wanting to pre-empt negative reactions from casual fans by embracing those traits head on, to make himself seem like he's hip to how these characters are perceived and somehow better than it.
I have to admit it took me noticing the pattern only in hindsight to realize just how crappy this approach is.
Right? Again, I ashamedly confess to liking Ultimate X-Men when I was about.. 15? And I thought Magneto making George Bush grovel was amazing. But with the benefit of hindsight? It's terrible, and he only got worse in adapting characters like Red Skull and the Punisher.
"It seems as though it is flowing upwards like as if he's underwater at all times... Rather fitting, that."
Which would make sense. Under a decent artist. With Land, it looks like Namor borrowed a really bad toupee from the Sean Connery collection that got caught in an updraft - it literally looks like it's just been drawn on to whatever hairstyle Land traced it from.
Uh, imitating a language's sounds is a far cry from actually speaking it, Namor. I can imitate a barking dog, too, but I'm not gonna pretend that I actually know what I'm saying, or even if I sound anything like an actual dog.
How do you even know the word for dog if you're just imitating them? Why are they talking about dogs around you? I find the linguistic skills of this 10,000 year-old superstrong merman implausible!
I would love if it turns out "The Invaders" did happen in this universe and he is just messing with them.
"Cap, we tought we should inform the ultimates that we found a thousands years old atlantean by the name of namor that..." "Namor? Oh yeah! i remember him. he is not thousands of years old, that's just him messing withpeople. is he still telling people about the "Imitating language" thing? last time he tried to trick people about that i told him it was stupid and made no sense"
I normally don't mind Land as much as most folks do, but Namor rejecting Sue's Mom by calling her a wrinkled old trout when there's nary a line to her face? Hah!
Is he punching Sue through one of her force fields? Because she was able to contain Hyperion for a good long time inside one, and he was able to overpower Thor after getting a faceful of nova flame from Johnny...
It appears Ultimate Sue has the power to move her breasts independently from the rest of her body. I'm submitting this for the Dumbest Superpower Ever award.
