Convergence: Supergirl Matrix

Anyone read Convergence Supergirl Matrix? Those of us here who read Matrix's adventures back in the early 90s and the transition into PAD's title/merging with Linda Danvers know that she was the first Supergirl to appear on New Earth after the Crisis reboot and was NEVER named Kara. The whole story kind of seemed like a shit show, from Lex verbally abusing Mae, to the assumption that Mae knew about him being the first Lex Luthor and wanting to kill Superman to of course the name mistake of him calling her Kara.



the first comic gives the feel of "I don't give a shit and never bothered to read anything on Matrix". I really hope when DC puts all the Convergence issues into one volume, some of this is fixed, ESP the name mistake tho at this point I don't even know if anyone has noticed it at DC. I'm hoping the second issue has no name mistakes.

I'm almost tempted to make all the bubbles blank in the issue and re-write it. BTW there should be a "char: supergirl/matrix" tag for this forum as she technically is a different character before becoming Linda in the PAD series.

You think that's bad? Luthor flat out calls her a blob that THINKS its Supergirl.

This was post-Crisis. Like it or not, Kara wasn't back yet, Matrix at this point WAS Supergirl.

Yes the verbal abuse is definitely an issue for sure, I think I might just re-write the story and post it haha. If anything maybe Matrix/Linda merged together might have made a better Convergence story.

Ma and Pa called her "Mae" but I think Lex did call her "Kara" at the time. Didn't he? It's been a while.

Not that this excuses this dialogue.

Nope he never called her that. No reason to, there was never a Supergirl before Matrix appeared on the scene. If the writer had actually read any of her stories from the 90s, even just the mini series in '94 he would have had a better grasp on Mae as a character and her relationship with Lex.

Which is sad, because he's actually a good writer who usually seems to understand that making a shared universe work requires respect for others' work within that universe. It's a real shame that he couldn't be bothered to pay any attention to this version of Supergirl's backstory.

Yes. And what's especially sad is that I feel that Giffen is someone who used to understand that. I really don't know why he even agreed to write Matrix-Supergirl if he wasn't even going to bother trying to do a good job.

The thing is Giffen has worked for DC for ages. I'm not sure if he has written Matrix before (but he must have given she WAS Supergirl during the biggest era of Superman - death, reign, return) so it's not like he has the excuse he doesn't know anything about the character the way a newbie writer assigned to the project might.

Just based on the work before us, he just clearly loathes the character and used Convergence to mock her.

That would have been years ago, though. Plenty of time to forget a detail like her never going by Kara. (And that's the only actual continuity error, as far as I can see. The rest of the differences can be chalked up to life moving on during the year spent under the dome.)

Still no excuse to not read up on her stories to get an idea of a character you're about to write for. It's not like she had a HUGE history like say Perez Wonder Woman's 1-206 issues and multiple Justice League issues. She had a few appearances in Superman and her own 4 issue mini series before getting her own title with Linda.
