This...this actually looks like it could be fun. Given this is DC, not Avatar or Dynamite, Ennis will be under something resembling editorial constraint.
I wonder what Guts's powers are. Or maybe I'd be better off not wondering.
There, see? Was that so hard? All you gotta do is push the natural silliness and absurdity of superheroes to about 50x, and you enter new realms of comedic potential!
(For real though, I thought this was pretty funny, if a little like watching a bunch of less-aware Deadpools pratfall over each other)
I'm aware that this is missing the point but... Okay, here's a book that basically runs on silly craziness and it's too ridiculous to have even one woman on the team. I'm not saying that it won't be good or whatever. It's just frustrating that there's still this attitude that woman can't be funny, that a woman made out of intestines or who welds dogs to things is somehow not as good an idea as a man doing the same things. Like women make comedy too complicated. And I'm not sure about this, since I don't really know the characters, but they're all white too, right? AGAIN I KNOW I'M MISSING THE POINT I REALLY DO It's just... ugh.
Now, now, I don't think DC thinks women can't be wacky-level funny.
Remember, they gave their silliest, wackiest female character A) a pretty fly solo book; and B) an actual, literal Sh*t Catapult to use on Dan Didio on said solo book.
Batman doesn't even have a Sh*t-apult. Hell, I don't think Joker has one, either.
Well, in the case of this particular story, it ends with Dogwelder physically assaulting the other characters. Which would take on an... unpleasant shade if any of those three victims were women.
Yeah, but this is a superhero comic. People beat other people up. And it's not like Dogwelder is supposed to be HEROIC. (Unless you mean sexual assault, which has a whole different set of connotations and shouldn't happen to either gender unless it's going to be treated with care and respect)
I just mean beating people up. Yeah, it happens in the genre all the time, but it's a lot harder to play that as *comedy* when it's a guy beating up a woman, for obvious reasons.
I'm pretty sure it's a guy. Think someone from dc referred to him as a 'he' somewhere when talking about this coming back? I could be mis-remembering. And one woman on a team of guys still isn't exactly great.
I am thrilled to see this team return. I am relieved it's only a miniseries. I'm ecstatic that this means Hitman is still somehow in continuity. I hope Tommy and Nat stay dead because that ending... yeah, that was a way to go.
I expect this to be tasteless, bizarre, uncomfortable, weird, borderline offensive, and still classier than Mark Millar's work. :)
I wonder, given the minor differences in appearance between the classic team flashback and the modern-day shot--is this the same Dogwelder? Or a new one? Or the old one as a zombie? And... does the new one happen to look black, based on skin tone and hair (the same things which are different from the flashback shot)? Or is it a trick of the art?
Ah, questions. The series no one demanded, but which DC is giving us because in the post-Convergence world, they're determined to confuse and baffle us.
I've probably just read too many Garth Ennis comics, but even this bit--with the wannabes getting smacked down by the OG dude--is a bit too reminiscent of the ending of Ennis and Dillon's original Punisher limited series. I really like McCrea's art, and I wish that DC could find something else for him to do.
