News about Nightwing post Convergence
May. 16th, 2015 12:04 amThough it's not directly linked to the cover, there's some interesting news about the direction the Grayson title is taking post the Convergence event.
For those not wanting to be spoiled, the full version of the Bombshell variant (by Emanuela Luppachino with Tomeu Morey) for #11 can be found by clicking on the preview image, but there's a full size version under the cut.

First up the cover..

From Robin the Boy Wonder, to Nightwing the Boy Bombshell!
Well, Dick is, as is so often the case, not exactly a fashion icon here. Excuse me indulging in a gay male stereotype here, but "Dick sweetie, what ARE you wearing?"
It’s a bit of a hot mess, the blue top with the broad yellow stripe would be fine, but the blue waistcoat over the top foesn't really work, and that white sash belt looks like it's been made out of a net curtain, but what the heck...
And look, he’s even brought his own gag for the inevitable kidnapping (Okay, that last may be more a personal thing, but…)
Aaaanyway.... as you may know if you've been following the title is that the outcome of "forever Evil" means that the world, including everyone in the Batfamily other than Bruce, believes he's dead...
But that's about to change... according to an interview with Tom King and Tim Seeley
Nrama: Speaking of Batman… we just found out that he's assumed dead, and things have changed a bit in Gotham City. Does that change things for Dick Grayson? Do you deal with that?
King: Absolutely. That's panel #1 in Grayson #9 — the ramifications of that.
But we've known for some time what's coming, and it's part of the story.
Batman had Dick out on this mission. He's the one contact, the one thing tying Dick to Gotham City and his family and friends, the one person who knows he's alive. And he's gone.
What does Dick do now?
Seeley: Yeah, and we really liked that idea when they pitched it — the Batman story that Scott Snyder was working on.
So for us, it was like, we can do an out-in-the-cold mission, you know? We can do a spy with no ties home, which just added cool ideas for us.
.....
Nrama: We've also been told that in Grayson #10, we're going to see Dick Grayson come face to face with Lex Luthor. Can you tell us anything about what that meeting means?
King: That comes from Tim's brilliant mind.
Seeley: I just felt like, you know, Lex was the guy who "killed" Dick during Forever Evil and decided he was expendable.
Maybe he did save the world by doing it, but clearly Dick's going to have some issue with the dude that sort of killed him in front of his mentor.
But yeah, I think it ended up being a really good way to tie in, to make people question what Spyral's doing. So yeah, I think the scene we have there is one of my favorite things I've ever written.
You'll see some cool dynamics between, you know, a guy like Lex Luthor who is obviously the quintessential supervillain, but he's also a guy with some of the same interests as Spyral.
Nrama: Well Lex is only one of the people who appears to be interacting with Dick after the DCU returns in June. Is there a shift toward bringing him into the DCU?
King: Yeah, the next season will be about Dick Grayson returning to the DCU, and the impact that has on him as a character, and on all the other characters.
Also, this is the 75th Anniversary of Dick Grayson, and we have big plans for him throughout all of DC. Our goal from the beginning was to make him an A-List superhero, and you're going to start to see some of that come up in the next year.
Yay, someone at DC remembers that this is Dick's 75 anniversary!
It'll be nice to see Dick being back in the world (as it were), and I do wonder how the family will take to being lied to (Alfred especially).... though as has been noted, Dick's appearance as the faux-Batman at the end of the recent Joker story seems to suggest that SOME OF THEM must be in on the act... though I'm guessing that'll be ignored...
As a special treat for those reading this far down a couple of recent additions to my collecction courtrsy of Mr Seeky, when he was visiting London for the London Super Comic Convention...
First up the original art for a print he had one sale, with Dick displaying his own unique brand of gunplay (and a despairing Helena in the background)
And the moment Mr Seeley won me over completely when I asked if he'd like to sketch on the cover of a blank Grayson #1 and said he was free to draw whichever version of the character he liked, be it Agent 37, Nightwing or Robin and he lit up when I said I didn't mind if he drew the classic Robin costume (Mind? Me? I have to factor in that he didn't actually know me of course) and he mentioned that he LOVED this outfit (and was perhaps not 100% sold on the New 52 Robin costume..)

Date: 2015-05-16 03:26 pm (UTC)As for someone remembering Robin's anniversary, Scott Snyder has said that the next season of Eternal will have a huge focus on the Robins.
As for Endgame, I got the feeling from the dialogue that only Julia knew about the switch, and she didn't even know who it was. I think when the rest of the family finds out, we'll KNOW, and get a lot of delicious angst and drama from it.
