Quasar & Moondragon

Since our overlords commanded it, so mote it be! Here are two scenes from Annihilation: Conquest: Quasar between Phyla-Vell and Moondragon.


The issue starts with them fighting a Brood. Phyla-Vell snaps (we find out later that Annihilus's personality was sucked into the quantum bands and has been influencing her, I think) and Heather has to talk her down.








At the end of the issue, Moondragon turns into an actual moon dragon. Because... reasons.

So, did Heather's transformation stick?

Up until she died at the end of the event, yes. (Don't know if she's been brought back since, nor if she was still a dragon if she were.)

also, yes, she has returned since then and isn't a dragon naymore, i have no idea where she is.

*checks* She got the fatal wound at the end of issue 2, and her actual passing away came in the first third of issue 3, yes.

She died during Annihilation Conquest, then came back in human form during the following Guardians of the Galaxy series. Then bad things happened to Phyla instead.:(

You know, It's thelittle things that make it for me in comics. for example, the heroine mounting (ahem) her dragon lover in the middle of space wielding a sword made of energy and ready to kick ass. a shame she did not survive to do this in the GOTG series that started after the event.

Given that James Gunn has said that GOTG 2 will have at least one new female team member, and that it's a story about "parents," I'm REALLY hoping that Moondragon is in the movie:

-It gives Drax some more character development (given that his whole thing in the first movie was avenging his family).
-She's just a cool/interesting character.
-It opens the door for Phyla to appear (if not in this film, then later on).
-It could add some much-needed diversity into the MCU.

Is this story giving Moondragon a "Parallax excuse?"

In other Moondragon info, when she first appeared she was called "Madam MacEvil."

No, the Dragon of the Moon influencing her dates from the tale end of the original run of the Defenders, back in the '80s.

I knew about the Dragon of the Moon. I didn't know it influenced her behavior, as in Korvac wasn't that bad or taking over that one alien planet.

Aye, I remember reading some old Defenders comics back then, there was one where she forced...Cloud was it? To split into two genders or something...gawd it was confusing.

But yeah, I don't know how much that Dragon influences her base personality though. The old 80s comics where she was briefly with the Avengers, she really was an irritating uppity person,up to mindwiping Pietro's 'hatred and bigotry' at one point with no provocation except his constant griping was annoying her.

Cloud was really a sentient nebula (because comics) that accidentally absorbed the minds and memories of Carol Faber and Danny Milligan, giving it a human form and gender identity issues. One of those "You're not X, you only *think* you are X" things comic books do remarkably often.

Carol and Danny were healed and restored in the final issue of DEFENDERS by Moondragon.

Really the only thing that I can find wrong with these panels, Moondragon's thong costume (seriously why, that has to be uncomfortable)? But that's more an art problem than a writing one.

Phyla Vells Quasar look was so fucking awesome

That past panel. Make a cool poster for the movie. Sure, Heavy Metal fans will call Marvel rip offs, but this is dragon love baby! Not even Heavy Metal had that.

You know I always thought the Dragon of the Moon worked better as a metaphorical dragon; like a shadow of thought in the shape of a dragon or something.

Because it as a literal dragon...I don't quite get it?

And less importantly, why is her hair white? Isn't she uh... Mar's (his first name was Mar, right?) sister? Is white hair common where they were born?

And why is she Quasar? What happened to Quasar? Why isn't she Captain Marvel?

(1) Daughter of Mar-Vell, sister of Genis-Vell.
(2) Quasar died in Annihilation and Annihilus took the quantum bands. Phyla managed to steal them back, so she took up the Quasar mantle.
(3) Probably she didn't call herself Captain Marvel because (a) she had the quantum bands, so she was using Quasar's powers; and (b) she had a massive inferiority complex about not being good enough to live up to her father's/brother's name. She didn't feel she was a good enough Quasar, either, but at least the bands kinda made her Quasar regardless.

Oh right! Genis. They should really front line this cosmic stuff more. When I was a kid I got a handful of the Defenders when they were in space for reasons and that stuff seemed to disappear. It was when Cloud was with them. And Mantis was supposed to become space Jesus. And I missed all this Vell siblings stuff and when they brought back the guardians of the galaxy and this giant war I keep hearing about where apparently Nova died. I have a million questions, but I wouldn't even know where to start reading.

I haven't been keeping track of the revolving door lately, so let me just ask: are either of them alive again in current continuity?

I have no idea who's considered "alive" given Secret Wars, but prior to that I think Moondragon was alive and Phyla-Vell was dead.
