I know hindsight is 50/50, but they totally should have launched Angela in the 616 with this look and background. It's immediately more striking than the original design, which was too close to McFarlane's, and this background for her easily could have generated more story beats than the too-quickly-unveiled 'oh hey you're Odin's secret kid because we wanted to thumb our nose at a guy who used to work for us' approach.
Well, if she isn't an Angel who fights demons and monsters (usually regardless of their moral alignment), then can she really be considered the same character?
Good point, though I was curious because while this Angela is very similar to the regular Angela, there are still some differences should she have become the 'main' one. I have difficulty finding words to describe how I feel. I suppose what I was trying to say is that I'm fine with their being this version in it's own distinct pocket of reality, but I'm not sure how I'd feel if this had been the character introduced since 'Age of Ultron' (though I suspect this incarnation will be the main protagonist of Angela: Queen of Hel, which I don't mind either).
I'd say you could have easily gotten away with bringing this version in first. There's enough in terms of even the religious connotations of being a 'witch hunter' that you could have easily had that as a nod to her Image-based pseudo-religious/McFarlane wanted to draw hot mostly naked angel-women origins.
She isn't *really* an Angel fighting demons and monsters in the 616, after all.
I suspect they did not have an idea of what to do with her and the Odin bit was decided after she appeared. But yeah, if they ever launch another 1602 book, post-secret wars. i would hope they make it about this Angela.
She's already gotten several new designs since then, the newest one being a mash-up with Hela. Of course, I do agree completely with what you're saying there though.
I heard that they wanted her "intro look" to "homage" the McFarlane design (while not being quite as ludicrous). But apparently they were always planning to change it eventually (which they did in her solo book, to cool new armor).
Oh and the GOTG as a circus trope is just, amazing.
