Daaang, Ewing impressed me! And I go in with high expectations of an Ewing book to begin with!

No kidding. I'm hard-pressed to name anything he's done that I've read and didn't like.

He's one of Marvels best writers at the moment. A love and understanding of continuity, but he doesn't let it overflow people that might not know it all, and he's not afraid to make new things with it.

I have all his post-Secret Wars stuff on my pull-list, with great anticipation!

I've been able to keep up with most of the Marvel minutiae at play in Secret Wars, but Ewing threw me for a loop with Boss Magniconte. That's All-American from Kickers Inc. I mean that's Bessie the Hellcow levels of total obscurity, and Bessie even got a shout-out on Agents of SHIELD.

Yeah, Excalibur was never going to stay contained for one second longer than until Captain Briton called on it.

I was impressed that it was able to cut a Mjolnir in two. It made sense with the reveal that Doom was behind Captain Britain, but in the regular Marvel Universe I would assume that Odin's enchantments trump those of the Lady of the Lake.

Marvel's Excalibur is also linked to the Pendragon spirits, and through them to the Green Knight. Which is some heavy magical mojo.

There are also stong Otherworld forces at play in Excalibur, with Merlyn and Roma being omnidimensional entities who could probably trump Odin in any number of ways.

As a minor detail, I love how the font of Jennifers speech bubbles changes after she's stripped of her hammer.

Boss Cage? Oh, so that's where Mondo City was from (I mean, besides 2000ad). The time travel Thunderbolts era.

Faiza's scene is impressive.

The best part of this was the antagonists paraphrasing David Cameron, because that was the logical conclusion of that joke.

Also, the everything else.

Loved this mini, I'm a little disappointed that it's over already (not to mention surprised, given the mess of one shots and miniseries involved in Battleworld, I genuinely didn't realize this was just two issues.) Ewing always nails the kind of hopeful and altruistic superheroism that other books seem to miss, and he and Alan Davis have made a fantastic team.

I also really like the Hobie Brown Spider Hero concept in this book, it's a pity that it's so incompatible with the 616 universe.

Definitely a highlight of this weeks comics for me. Ewing on writing, Davis on art, and playing with Marvels multiversal toybox... What's not to love?
