'It's a tightrope that's tougher to walk than it might first appear. It would be so easy to turn this into such a straight up super-hero book that it may as well be Spider-Man. But, again, if that's the approach, then why not just write Spider-Man? Likewise, it would be equally easy to do nothing but street level crime stuff, but again, I'm not as good a crime writer as Bendis. I'm not as good a crime writer as Brubaker. Why go that route? From my point of view, this seems like the first time in 15 years that somebody has given me the keys to the car and said "do what you wanna do", and I have, and it's succeeded. Generally, I do what I think is best to reinvent a franchise and write for the non-hardcore audience, and the nerd rage is off the charts.' -- Mark Waid

I wonder if Waid's gonna play up the fact that, now that Matt's ID is public knowledge, he could totally have Fisk arrested. He can testify in a court of law, now.

Plenty of people could testify against Fisk in a court of law. Somehow, it never seems to help. (Plus, it seems like it wouldn't be hard for a halfway decent lawyer to shred his credibility. "What about these seventy-three known cases of you lying to the court?")

Fist has been arrested and convicted dozens of times, it wouldn't make any difference.

Isn't it also stated that stopping fisk would create an unbalance in the crime world that noone wants?

Even in DAREDEVIL #300, where the Kingpin went on the run, resulted in various people vying for his empire in follow-up issues.

"You want me to work for you."

Back in "the old days" (Miller, Nocenti, etc) Kingpin was pretty good at getting Daredevil to do what he wanted, even if Daredevil didn't know (or wasn't sure) Fisk was involved. And this was before and after BORN AGAIN.

Huh. Is that Cloak?

No, an obscureish hero (now villain, more like) called the Shroud.

It's the Shroud.
Basically a guy who wanted to fight evil so he joined a Kali cult and got blinded as part of their initiation ritual but gained shadow powers and echolocation as a result, and then he started pretending to be a villain to take down bad guys from within, and at some point started dating Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman and then became unhinged and turned into a real villain for some reason.

Kinda cool, but no one's ever been able to do anything really awesome with him, which is a shame. I'd totally have read a series about him when he was leading the Night Shift (a team of weird-ass supervillains in Los Angeles) and trying to use them to "control" the underworld.

Dammit, I just read that most of the Night Shift were killed by Count Nefaria during the 2011 Moon Knight series... the same villain and series which killed Echo/Ronin.

Damn it, Bendis, stop killing interesting yet underappreciated characters. Some of us happen to like the really weird villains. *grump* Hopefully, this is one of those deaths that won't take, and someone will find a way to bring them back again.

I had no idea Echo was dead, that's a shame.

And yea, interesting minor characters should be stored up for later use.

The most amazing thing about Shroud is that the very first villain he decided to go after was DOCTOR DOOM.

Has Shroud made an appearance in any of the Battleworld/Secret Wars stuff?

I really love how Kingpin always ends up standing in front of brawlers like Daredevil or Spider-Man, to announce how brilliant a schemer he is, "I have you now, muhahaha, your loved ones are in my web, what can you do?" And it's like, "......dude, we're superheroes. We're just gonna throttle the shit out of you. Moron." Make all the plans you want. That's all we know how to do. End of the day. It ends in somebody getting a fist in their jaw.

EDIT: I mean Matt's pretty cerebral, but it often comes down to the ol' boxin' and ninja attacks.

That's Spider-Man, not Daredevil. Kingpin at least, even if Daredevil is able to subdue him, has been more than able to hold his own in physical combat. He beat the crap out of Captain America at one point and was only stopped when a bird distracted him.

Well, he was originally Spider-Man's foe anyways. My point still stands. Fisk likes to run his mouth and play these schemes, but he's always gonna come down to a major fist fight, and the writers aren't always gonna let it come up his way (I find that Cap victory of his laughable; "peak human" or not).

And in most major fist fights Kingpin isn't a pushover.

It's pretty annoying that Julia Carpenter is just a helpless hostage. Even without the precognitive abilities of Madame Web she should still have enough spider powers to take down a Daredevil knockoff. Or at least to escape capture. Unless they somehow got an inhibitor collar on her
