I think Spider-Gwen is about *this* far from becoming Marvel's equivalent of 'fetch' for me. I like the core book enough, but they're tapping the hype way too much.
Yup, maybe not quite on the same level as the Inhumans, but dangerously close. Part of it for me might be natural hype backlash, but what really got me rolling my eyes was the announcement of a Gwenpool Special one-shot rolling out of those obnoxious linewide variant covers.
And I say this as someone who actively likes Spider-Gwen and has been reading her series (and the preceding one-shot) from the start.
I'd have personally preferred a Gerard Way-written sp//dr series after the pretty awesome one-shot, especially since the first five issues of Spider-Gwen just felt like they were slotting Gwen in Peter's role - that's gotten a little better with the current #1. But.. Yeah. She's dangerously close to being overhyped and I don't think Marvel quite get *why* this take is appealing. I like her for some of the same reasons I like Ultimate Gwen, for instance.
I really wish they'd stop calling her Spider-Gwen. That's a name that screams 'LOOK! SHORT TERM GIMMICK!' and I like Gwen enough that I'd like her to last longer than that.
The trouble is that you already have an active Spider-Woman, and several Spider-Girls - including one that some people will get incredibly pissy over if anyone else is even suggested being given that title - so calling her Spider-Woman in her own title but marketing it as 'Spider-Gwen' makes sense to me.
That's pretty much Marvel's thing though. They don't seem to recognise that people may love a certain character, but they love them in small doses. Throw them into lots of books and their novelty quickly wears off. Gwen and Squirrel Girl are in danger of becoming this year's Deadpool.
So, this series was rather disappointing. I was really looking forward to a series about lots of Marvels female heroes kicking ass and taking names, and it had some good moments in it. But the plot was so generic, the villain of the piece was very predictable in her identity (And I was so sad they went with her, given the life this setting had given her), and the dialogue was, with a handful of exceptions, very flat.
