The story begins with a flashback to the original JSA, where the Ultra-Humanite stole the body of a socialite by the name of Delores Winters, where he swapped out her brain with his own for reasons that the JSA were never particularly clear on, with theories ranging from wanting to exploit her wealth and power as a 1940s movie star to just wanting to look hot. Needless to say, not much thought was put into what happened to the unfortunate Ms Winters' brain, but the Ultra-Humanite managed to burn out her body in a barely a year due to implanting a mystic gem in their head. After which he had a multitude of various bodies, including an albino gorilla, he was finally killed by the Crimson Avenger in a prior modern JSA storyline, which confuses Mid-nite as a dude with gorilla arms (who he presumed was the Ultra-Humanite) attacks him.
He gets knocked out, and when he comes to to find a woman, a mad scientist and the ape-man peering at him.

Endless Winter reveals that in addition to her own surgeries, Winters has been having the superfolk kidnapped in order to sell their organs to gross rich folk.

Yeah... ew.
Mid-nite manages to escape due to the gorilla-armed guy deciding to light a cigarette in an operating theatre that was filling with pure oxygen, which starts a fire which allows the superhero a distraction to escape from his bonds. The various rich folks attempt to jump Mid-nite, but being a mixture of movie stars and society heiresses he easily fends them off, resulting in Endless Winter attempting to use her stolen ice powers on him...
...Only this ends up freezing not only Mid-nite but also her own arm, which gives the doctor the opportunity to snap it off at the elbow, yikes.

No word on whether ther other victims of Endless Winter were repaired, though Icemaiden (a different character to Ice of JL International fame) wasn't shown to have recovered from this. This is despite her apparently being one of DC's first bisexual characters, aw. Winter herself would later appear (with both arms) in Batwoman's series, where it appears she was being blackmailed by Prometheus, in order to provide a distraction for his own scheme. She dies in the battle, with the JLA claiming her body to presumably stick Icemaiden's skin back on.

Date: 2015-12-13 11:58 pm (UTC)I always feel for the obscure superheroes and villains, so it disturbs me when they get used in such horrifying manner. Roulette with her death games, Endless Winter with her body-stealing black market... yikes.
It's bad when you have to ask "Whatever happened to...?" and the answer involves mutilation.

Date: 2015-12-14 10:19 am (UTC)One of the things that i like/d about DC over Marvel is/was its expansive sense of history and a world that seemed big enough to fill it with tons of obscure or regional superheroes (like Buckeye, the Cleveland-based superhero Onomatopoeia killed).
It just seems a shame that it was all thrown out the window with the reboot, and what few obscurer heroes and villains that got through the cracks where killed off in events like that one with Harvest and the Teen Titans.
