So as I stated in the last post the current incarnation of Yondu is very much a lift of the character from the movie (in which James Gunn completely reworked the character with Michael Rooker in mind as a space pirate). The reasoning apparently is that the classic version comes from "Earth-691" and this is the one from "Earth-616". Now again I'm not at all bothered by this (the different earth distinction even makes sense) but is kind of interesting to see how steadfast Marvel is in making their comics aligned with the films.

The original Yondu is also from the 31rst century so this isn't likely to even be an alternate universe counterpart just another Alpha Centurion who got off world early cut his crest into a smaller mohawk(Which actually kind of makes sense because the original once said it wasn't a fin it was a crest made of compressed hair follicles) and became a pirate.

That, I can be okay with.

Just wow, fans of the original Guardians got seriously screwed over due to the films/cartoons/ect.

To make matters worse they appeared recently and the designs were just wrong. I mean Martinex looked like Iceman instead of a multifaceted crystal being and Nikki actually had hair with glowing points instead of actual fire for hair.

Speaking as one of those fans who thrilled when Nikki took a cab to see the Avengers....let's be honest for a moment: the Guardians were NEVER very popular until the Abnett/Lanning updating of them brought them back into the mainstream. They'd been around since the 60s but hadn't been able to maintain even a backup feature, let alone a title of their own.

The movies/cartoons/etc are all just adapting the more popular recent runs of the characters which are far and away more successful than the original material, as much as I love it. That they are, in turn, influencing the comics right back is just SOP for successful adaptions.

Well, the old-school Guardians did actually maintain a title of their own in the 90's. It ran for 62 Issues. I don't think they were ever one of Marvel's most popular teams, certainly, but they did have a modest following and did hold their own title for about 5 years.

Somehow I totally missed that they had a series in the early 90s, which seems amazing that I was totally ignorant of until you mentioned it. I suspect it was more popular due to Jim Valentino's work than the characters, given that after 1995 they fell into total obscurity. 62 issues is certainly not nothing , but they were still not particularly mainstream, being more of the glut of the 90s, I'd wager. I'm not saying they didn't have their fans, but looking at Diamond's top lists for the 91/92/93, only one issue (Valentino's last, I think) cracked the top 300 for the year...probably due to collector speculation.

I mean, after 1995, they made cameos in some off-canon titles like Avengers: Infinity and Earth X, but really were off the radar until the Annihilation recreated them and their subsequent 2008 series. That to me suggests that they weren't all that popular; heck, neither were most of the main members of the new Guardians. Star Lord, Groot and Rocket Racoon weren't exactly big names when they jump-started the new series.

As noted, the Gurdians did have a rather good long running title, which was perhaps the closest thing that Marvel had to the Legion of Superheroes. cosmic space hijinks in the future and meeting descendents of other noted Marvel characters.

Was original flavour Yondu a self-serving pirate? I thought he was more of a "fighting against the oppressive evil alien empire" type of pirate.

He wasn't a pirate at all really more Proud Warrior race guy in space. Since he was from a primitive culture that had been tolerated by the humans who colonized his planet and then fought against the Baddoon when they supposedly caused the extinction of his people.

Huh.
Well, at least they acknowledged why he didn't look like the first Yondu or any of his previously-established race. Cut off his headfin indeed.

I don't want Star Lord looking like Chris Pratt though.

I find, perhaps to my surprise, that I'm not too bothered by that as Star Lord always seemed a vaguely genericallly handsome looking character. This gives him a little more personality in his look, by association if nothing else.
