I'm not a fan of the Snape/Lily pairing (or at least the romantic Fandom portrayal of it. I like it a lot in canon because it's so fascinatingly messed up, in a way similar to Shakespearian tragedies, where deaths and suffering could be easily avoided but are not because people have issues. But I find that too many fans erase Lily's agency and treat her as just Snape's object of desire).
But I LOVE the idea of portrait!Snape shenanigans. He could be like the Caged Demonwolf from Empowered, or potato!GLaDOS. Eff, he could be like Salem from Sabrina :D
And while we are honouring Alan Rickman, I want to share this:
Haha, that's a great one! Though I've always kinda wondered about the lives of the painting people. Are they afterlives of the people they represent? Duplicates? Do they have their own preferences, can they grow and change in different directions than the people they represent?
I'm not really a fan of this. I'm not the Snape hater that a lot of people are, but something about the idea of a Painting!Lily being used to satisfy a Painting!Snape seems wrong to me. I can't imagine real life Lily running up and kissing Snape like that, so this almost feels like it's robbing her if her autonomy to me? I'll admit it's confusing to pin down why it rubs me the wrong way though, since we're talking about two enchanted objects as representations of two characters.
You're exactly right, but you've also helped me pin down what I don't like about this. This doesn't really feel like an image of Lily. It's almost like the silhouette of a girl that we take to be Lily because Snape identifies her as that. Her face is obscured, her actions are framed as being Snape's "reward." It's almost like this isn't truly a portrait of Lily Potter (née Evans). It's a portrait of Snape's Lily.
Yea theres something a bit "Lily as a reward: here but - if the portraits have the same personalities and priorities as the living...
Snape - jack ass that is - DID do a lot after her death to help her son. He might have been an ass about it - might have done it for the wrong reasons - but in the end he did save Harry multiple times. So I don't see Lily giving him a peck on the cheek after all that too out of character. It's not a passionate gesture, its not a promise of anything else. Nor does it look like he expects more.
The gift might have just been Harry arranging for the meeting, portraits aren't completely free range, there are boundaries to where they can and can't go on their own.
