Four pages from chapter 42 (the latest one).
So it turns out in this verse when Harley met the Joker he was a criminal with a sense of humor, but relatively psychologically stable. They "robbed from the rich, and gave to whoever," but eventually Mistah J started drinking more and more, adding ethanol into the mix, and apparently made a pact with a vampire out in the bayou... he became more cruel, and Harley left him.
Now she and Ivy are breaking into the Joker's Daughter's Cabaret.

"Master? Come on lady-- it's 1941!"

Date: 2016-05-09 10:55 am (UTC)I don't disagree with you. I just think that characterization is one of those things that editorial really needs to monitor far more closely than they do (especially for the bigger name or pushed characters). And if a writer likes a more / less sympathetic version of a character than is currently in play and editorial okays the change there should be some logical progression to that point rather than snapback or sudden onset conscience / insanity.
I mean it must be positively bizarre for someone coming from some of the far more positive portrayals if say Harley in the all ages / more female focused comics into even her current portrayal let alone her classic one. And Ivy's even worse (since while Harlequinn was often murderous she's generally far less personally malevolent).
For another example I just read the Robin War trade and the surrounding Robin War issues and the thing is an incoherent mess. It's not even consistent on which other Robin Jason loathes more between writers (one had him loathing Tim the least and another the most). And further more We Are Robin continues as if they'd decided to no longer be Robin but Robin War ended on them getting promised more training at a latter time. It's like everyone got given a 3 sentence summary of the plot, the characters involved and a handful of key locations and events and then went off and did their own thing. And that was a Bat-Family crossover inside a theoretically unified editorial department that they knew was going to end up in a TPB.

Not only is Ivy not that much of a shrinking violet, rarely would I have in past been able to refer to Wonder Woman as, "adorkable."
In Bombshells Mera, Lois, and Huntress are all a bit different.
This Ivy is no less willing to feed people to plants for messing up the environment, it just happens that the target of her rage are Nazis for what they've done to the French countryside. Harley Quinn here is still a criminal...

Date: 2016-05-09 02:08 pm (UTC)I normally only follow the Bat-Familty stuff + Bat-associated Teams (so usually JLA and Titans) and I've been out since around Final Crisis but I'm going to give Rebirth a shot. I feel like I should give some of these comics a try too.
