"I can honestly say that JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE was one of the weirdest, darkest tales I’ve ever written. I think it may be the darkest JLA story ever written, although others may beg to differ. AM I proud of that? Not proud, no. I merely state what I feel to be true. I certainly know this tale isn’t to everyone’s taste. I know some people are even angered by it. But it’s a work I stand behind. I hope, reading it as one combined (and therefore quicker) read, you’ll see what I was going for…the slower build, gaining momentum…the growing cast…the growing event."

Good grief, that is one lifeless looking Supergirl.
Lookit her! Lookit her eyes!

... And how hard does she have to be hitting that guy for that much blood to be coming out of him?

not that hard, blood from the nose or a tooth can come out from a fairy decent punch.

This series is so weird. That splash page says that Green Arrow and Green Lantern easily took out Killer Frost and Black Manta simultaneously without taking a scratch. Neither of them is exactly a light weight.

I'm even giving them a pass on Scarecrow since his Fear Gas is known to be overcomable with Heroic Willpower and Green Lanterns are the exemplar of that.

I am convinced that the script for those panels just said, "Green Arrow and Green Lantern stand over a bunch of fallen super villains. I don't care which ones you use so long as it makes them look cool."

Heck with Frost and Manta. They're standing over Dr. Polaris, DC's Magneto. That's an impossible curb stomp right there

Holy Shit. I just went back and looked...the art is so messed up there that I didn't recognize him on first glance. That is some Grade-A stomping going on there. Dr. Polaris was able to hold off the entire Justice League single-handedly until Plastic Man took him out. Heck, even Hellgrammite has gone toe-to-toe with Superman and Batman both.

I mean, sure, I can see them taking some of these guys, but B-List chumps? Not so much, man.

Different Doctor Polaris I think. This one is his successor (if I've got the time frame right). But he should have all the same powers and less mental instability though also probably less experience and less madness induced power recklessness though (since not Jokerized).

The spear throwing guy was getting up in the first page of that little scene, neither the Greens nor the other heroes who showed up noticed this guy slowly rising with a spear in his hand until Supergirl showed up?

How could they? They were distracted.

By justice!

To be fair to Hal it's not like a Wooden Spear with a metal tip can do much to him under normal circumstances (due to the force field) , it is super careless of Ollie though (who I'm pretty sure they were trying to make as competent as Batman at this stage).

Javelin originated as a GL foe, so Hal knows about him using gimmicked yellow javelins

Isn't this set after the point in time where Yellow is anything more than a mild inconvenience to the Green Lanterns ? Or did the Yellow Weakness still bypass the passive forcefield and require active attention to overcome ? Not really a Lantern reader so not sure exactly how that works.

I swear, the panel in the one issue where Congorilla was screaming out Justice made me smile. For all the wrong reasons.

This series is in every way, shape and form an abominable mess. James Robinson is an over rated hack and I'm now convinced Starman was written by somebody else.

It wasn't screaming out justice it was a Cry for Justice (and dear lord was that an over used title reference).

Apparently she was meant to join the team when this was an ongoing pitch. Which is weird considering Ollie ends up killing Prometheus and Batwoman was down with the not killing thing. Maybe the originally proposal was better and DC Editorial mandated some changes to line up with other plans that moved it from meh to what it ended up as.

As much as I'm completely 'eh' on Gail Simone these days, I got a real chuckle out of her response to Robinson's completely pathetic 'LOOK HOW KEWL AND EXTREEEME HAL IS BECAUSE HE SAYS HE HAD SEX WITH HUNTRESS AND BLACKHAWK' moment, which (I think) had one or the other of the Birds saying Hal basically got drunk on his own.

Also, I know he had some time to reflect and deal with it, but is that really ALL Ray Palmer has to say after an instance in which his ex-wife went nuts and seriously damaged the superhero community? 'Needed some time, back now, who are we torturing today in the same manner Jean killed someone'?

Cry for Justice was pretty terribly written yeah. It's hard to believe this was supposed to be a possible Justice League replacement series. You have to wonder what exactly was going through editorials mind when someone pitched "Make the Justice League terrible hard people making bad tough choices" as an ongoing proposal for someone to say "Sounds awesome".

It was originally supposed to be Fire and Ice, but Robinson changed it because he didn't want the complication that would add to the Guy/Hal friendship.

Well, that's worse, for sure. The concept's still incredibly unneeded anyway, and entirely out of place with how things were in Hal's own book I think.

Aren't all of those characters (Huntress, Lady Blackhawk, Fire, Ice) too old for Hal?

The only good thing about this series was that it didn't last too long.

I just wonder who was more responsible for this series being such a travesty. Editorial, or Robinson? I suspect the answer is "Yes".

It's a toss-up.
The editorial staff behind it, which if you check the credits up there includes Berganza, wanted it to be so much, much worse.

Something to the effect of destroying every city but Gotham and Metropolis.
They also demand Lian Harper die, and Mia Dearden.

So apparently ("apparently") Robinson was filtering down some of the sheer stupidity.
But from the looks of it, the rest of this Eisner award winning series is allll him.
