Yeah, this is why stories like this are just poison to me. (See also the Hyperclan in JLA, the High's group in Stormwatch etc.) It's insultingly facile, but if we really could take Reed's hand-waved accomplishments at face value he would unquestionably be the hero of the piece.
No, the *price* isn't too high, the problem is that everyone who ostensibly tries to do things like this is always secretly an evil liar, or they fail for some unforeseen reason and no-one ever tries to fix that flaw and try again, or whatnot.
Which is obviously not going to change because if it did, you wouldn't be writing a superhero story anymore, but for that reason I wish they would just stop using that plot.
What gets me is that at this point in the Ultimate line it actually could have had that stuff change for real and stick. The Ultimate Universe was already pretty much broken and was no longer a flagship for Marvel, so why not let it go in a genuinely new direction and move towards doing a speculative fiction sort of thing?
It would have been a smart and unexpected use of the Ultimate U's unique position and lack of a status quo, much moreso than just having characters turn evil and/or die.
"We have enforced global peace... somehow. In an incredibly short amount of time. Please ignore the sheer amount of effort this should really take to maintain. And please don't ask why I didn't do this in the first place, rather than killing all those people."
"Nevermind how how people won't *want* to strive for hard goals if we solve all the problems for them, nevermind that getting rid of currencies as an easier method payment versus clumsy bartering systems that aren't regulated so the value of my goods doesn't wildly fluctuate between buyers, nevermind-"
"Yeah, you're a naive child with access to miracle tech. Please shut up."
