While the Bomb Shells engage the forces of the Third Reich in the Berlin Ghetto the young Miriam tries to console some of the children telling them stories of the bravery of the past.
Miriam Marvel! But why are some of these ancient Hebrew heroines blonde?
Though I guess you could say these are representations of these heroines in the imaginations of Ashkenazi children born and raised in Europe.
Also if you're paying homage/poking fun at the Shazam trope, it might be nice to have one non-Biblical deity/hero as part of her powerset, just like Solomon stuck out like a sore thumb among the Greek gods and demigods.
This was definitely unexpected. I should have known something was up considering how much focus Miriam was getting in the previous chapter talking with Batwoman.
I saw it coming when I saw the red dress with gold trimmings last issue (not bragging! Just a statement) - the real pleasant surprise was seeing other people similarly stoked for this.
King Jeremiah? (Jeremiah was a prophet, Josiah was the king). Zipporah... wasn't actually in Egypt? (Moses sent her back, she's mostly known for circumcising their son with a flint when Moses was attacked). The Asenath story alluded to here is an obscure extra-BIblical tale that most Jews aren't aware of (I'm not sure that version is even in a Midrashic complilation, but it's certainly the less common Midrash on Asenath). And can anyone find anything Miriam actually did in the desert? Because she leads the women in song after the Splitting of the Sea, and she criticizes Moses for separating from his wife and is struck with leprosy, and that's about it, post-Exodus. Pre-Exodus, she's credited with keeping watch over Moses when his mother places him in the basket on the Nile and ensuring that his mother is brought to nurse him once he's found by Pharaoh's daughter. Rabbinically, the Jews are said to have had a rock that followed them through the desert and produced water in the merit of Miriam, but that's not really mentioned here.
They've got Shiphrah (but not Puah?) and Abigail right, though. The rest, I mean the idea is really cool, but it's horribly inaccurate to the Bible and to Jewish tradition.
I've got to admit this is both totally out of the box and awesome. Why is it the best versions of the Marvels are the ones never actually in DC continuity?
And Bombshells kicks all the ass yet again. Not only is this awesome in and of this arc, it's also wonderfully complementary to the overall narrative, where the Bombshell League just lost Stargirl.
Great job, creative team! (Now someone post Legend of Wonder Woman to one-two punch this thing.)
