When Jonathan Hickman took over the Avengers he added to the team, among other people, Hyperion of Earth 13034. The only survivor of an incursion, Hyperion was brought to Earth 616 by AIM scientists. He became a father figure to the Zebra kids of the savage land and bearded drinking buddies with Thor. The two of them died at the edge of the universe before Secret Wars.

This is yet another parallel universe Hyperion. This is not King Hyperion, or Supreme Power Hyperion, this is not Gruenwald's Hyperion. This is Hyperion without all that baggage. This is Hyperion with a fresh slate, for a very specific purpose. He comes out of what the big story is behind the whole Avengers three-year plan that I have. He's very important, very pivotal, and I think people are really going to dig where we go with that. He's not going to be our poor analogue for Superman.
Post secret-Wars, Hyperion is travelling across America as a truck driver. He's used his artic as a baseball bat to beat up some super-powered carnival freaks, rescued an alien held captive and picked up Doll, a runaway teen.

But Hyperion #5 sees him leave the carnival freaks behind and embark upon a very different sort of adventure

If you want to find love the Hyperion way, remember these three basic rules
Truth without compromise
Thought without error
All things for the betterment of the whole

Friends who decide for you that you MUST have romantic and/or sexual interactions.
They are well meaning, but sometimes they are like those evangelists who knock at you door and try to convince you that if you don't do te same things that make them happy, you will never be able to find "true" happiness.

Nice summation and I completely agree.

Doll was perhaps well meaning, but it really was none of her darned business.

I'm more surprised Hyperion went in the first place just because she had signed him up for it.

I like this bit, actually.

I'm pretty sure we've all had that kind of friend at some point. Heck, some of us may, back when we were younger and stupider, even have /been/ that kind of friend. (I know I was, and I'm sorry.)

I think it's good that 1) Doll, with the best of intentions, tried this and 2) that Hyperion's shown as not being okay with it and -- from what I can see -- that it's perfectly acceptable for him to not be okay with it.

With all respect to Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs And Ham, the *other* lesson -- that sometimes someone doesn't do things because they don't like $thing and will continue to not like $thing even if you trick/force them into it, and they will be annoyed with you for doing so because you were in the wrong -- needs to be taught as well, and it very rarely is.

Oh God, ages ago my best friend and his wife sprang an ambush blind double date on me and another single friend of theirs (who was about as thrilled by the development as I was). Fortunately, that evening was so painfully awkward that they gave up matchmaking as a hobby.

I'm more boggled she didn't wait to find out if he was even interested in that sort of things before signing him up.

On the other hand kudos for someone at least remembering aces are a thing that exist.

I suspect she was playing the odds? Heterosexuality is still the majority, so start with that one.

In my headcanon she registered him as "anything goes" and him standing in the middle of the panel with men to the left and women to the right indicates he got rotated through speed dates with everyone present.

EDIT: Huh, maybe more than my headcanon. Doll muses to herself "maybe he's just having a nice cup of coffee with a lovely lady or sexy dude" after she's signed Hyperion up for the speed dating and he's been gone for hours.

He's not going to be our poor analogue for Superman. Now let me just have him take a trip across America connecting with ordinary people, that's nothing like a Superman story.

To be fair, that trope was associated with The Hulk, Richard Kimble, and Michael Landon long before Superman.

Okay, yeah, fair enough. Just, that claim immediately followed by a description of what he was doing called to my mind the "walk across America" thing that... sort of happened? with Superman a while back.

But Superman wasn't a trucker and that is Hyperion's job.

Has anyone here done speed dating? As an introvert, I find the entire concept exhausting. Having to talk a new random person every few minutes sounds like my version of hell.

There's a comfort in it being transitory.

The main advantage of the format is that someone else is making us do it. We can be hasty and awkward and everyone else will understand because they're going through the same crap. Also, if we meet someone who's not what we're looking for, we don't have to spend the next couple of hours agonizing over how to break off the date as mercifully as possible. Yay for diffused responsibility!

Shes seventeen and hes really, really uptight. I don't think its entirely out of character for her to reason that he needs to get laid. When I was seventeen, sex loomed really large for me.

Also, popular culture from Captain Kirk onwards does indicate that tab A to slot B is a good way for aliens to connect.

...albeit briefly, before they part in sorrow or betray one another or lay eggs in one another's hollow places. In space no one can hear you sigh disappointedly.

Why exactly is getting 'laid' often given as some end-all be-all cure to almost any problem?

In this instance the thinking is by a pushy teenager who was raised by carnies, so not that unlikely a development.
