A Voyager post led to some discussion of Original!James T Kirk vs. Abrams!James T Kirk. So here are some pages I posted about Original!Kirk

The second DC Comics Star Trek series did a three-part series called "Star-Crossed" about the romance between James T. Kirk and Carol Marcus. This part takes a look at Jim spending some time with his family.

Kirk has found out Carol Marcus has a son named David, and that he is the father. He's thrown for a loop, but wants to marry Carol. She turns him down.

Wow. Even Star Trek characters get hung up on continuity.

The first William Shatner Star Trek novel "The Ashes of Eden" had Kirk visiting the family farm again, and remembering how he and Sam would play Cowboys and Indians. Of course, by the 23rd Century the Indians are good guys and the Cowboys are the bad guys.

A Star Trek novel called "Final Frontier" by Diane Duane (done before the movie with the same titles) also had Kirk visiting his family farm shortly after the events in "City on the Edge of Forever." He's still sad about Edith Keeler's death and contemplates resigning from Starfleet.

Jim Kirk is Scottish? That explains why Kirk is so comfortable bossing around Scotty.

Surprisingly, this ship *isn't* the Enterprise.

Most of this 3-part story makes it clear that Kirk only stayed away from Carol and David because Carol asked him to do so. They didn't want to make him the 23rd century version of a deadbeat dad.

No, the Farragut was the ship that Kirk served on as a Lieutenant (he had previously served on the Republic as an Ensign). This might be the non-canon Lydia Sutherland, which he was commanding just prior to receiving the captaincy of the Enterprise in the novel Enterprise: The First Adventure.

Trivia moment: the name is a reference to Horatio Hornblower (on whom Gene Roddenberry based some of Kirk's character), who commaned in his time the HMS Lydia and the HMS Sutherland.

Great posts! Kinda underscores the similarity of the childhoods of Jim Kirk and Clark Kent: boys growing up on farms in the Midwest. Great men from cornfields grow! ;)

That begs another question of the Abrams-verse; Sam is Jim's older brother, so was born before the divergence, so where was he in the new timeline? Does he even get a mention? (He might have done and I just missed it)

Y'know, Kirk already says as much during Wrath of Khan, when they're sitting around in the storage cupboard.
("I did what you asked. I stayed away.")

It's nice to see Kirk's Mom get some exposure here. The only thing we know from JJ Abrams' movies is that Kirk's mom is named sweetheart and is essentially just an incubator who lays down the whole time. Seriously, she's still a living character in these new movies and no one wants to do anything with her. When JJ announced the 4th movie would feature Chris Hemsworth returning as George Kirk, he said it was his favorite story to date. Ugh. Dad's are more important dead than mothers who are still alive. That just boggles my mind.

Star Trek The Next Generation had the unfortunate episode where it literally treated one of the few remaining female characters of the show like this. "The Child" had an alien impregnate Troi without her consent, give birth to him (Yes, 'him' despite the episode telling us in dialogue that the baby is exactly like Troi in every way) a day and a half later and have the incident be treated like it never happened. Really, that's the dialogue. And of course the baby grows up to be 10 years old hours later, causes an unintentional ruckus that will soon kill everyone onboard so he wills himself to die to fix it. Troi is so touched by this that she's brought to tears in the end.

Oh, and what's the best course of action that a doctor should do if someone says they were impregnated by an unknown entity? Take them to the bar.
