A Voyager post led to some discussion of Original!James T Kirk vs. Abrams!James T Kirk. So here are some pages I posted about Original!Kirk
The second DC Comics Star Trek series did a three-part series called "Star-Crossed" about the romance between James T. Kirk and Carol Marcus. This part takes a look at Jim spending some time with his family.
Kirk has found out Carol Marcus has a son named David, and that he is the father. He's thrown for a loop, but wants to marry Carol. She turns him down.

Wow. Even Star Trek characters get hung up on continuity.

The first William Shatner Star Trek novel "The Ashes of Eden" had Kirk visiting the family farm again, and remembering how he and Sam would play Cowboys and Indians. Of course, by the 23rd Century the Indians are good guys and the Cowboys are the bad guys.
A Star Trek novel called "Final Frontier" by Diane Duane (done before the movie with the same titles) also had Kirk visiting his family farm shortly after the events in "City on the Edge of Forever." He's still sad about Edith Keeler's death and contemplates resigning from Starfleet.

Jim Kirk is Scottish? That explains why Kirk is so comfortable bossing around Scotty.

Surprisingly, this ship *isn't* the Enterprise.
Most of this 3-part story makes it clear that Kirk only stayed away from Carol and David because Carol asked him to do so. They didn't want to make him the 23rd century version of a deadbeat dad.

No, the Farragut was the ship that Kirk served on as a Lieutenant (he had previously served on the Republic as an Ensign). This might be the non-canon Lydia Sutherland, which he was commanding just prior to receiving the captaincy of the Enterprise in the novel Enterprise: The First Adventure.
Trivia moment: the name is a reference to Horatio Hornblower (on whom Gene Roddenberry based some of Kirk's character), who commaned in his time the HMS Lydia and the HMS Sutherland.

Sam did appear in the IDW series.

("I did what you asked. I stayed away.")
