Yep, that's some old-school patriotic americanism they've resurrected. Brave, courageous, dedicated to serving their country... And, by modern standards, racist as fuck.
That last part always gets glossed over by old white men when they talk about the golden era of the sixties and seventies they're so desperate to bring back, but it's important to keep in mind.
It gets worse. Racist as fuck, homophobic as fuck... and later we even get some good old-fashioned Antisemitism, because the '40s were a different time.
BUT that's not to say the series was bad, it was a great way of examining the disconnect between then and now, and our idealized vision of that era vs today. It's like, if Captain America was THE shining, idealized figure of America at its best, these twelve represented everything else, good and bad.
Which is impressive considering that most of these characters had next to no backstory, characterization, depth, or complexity in the mere handful of appearances they got before being pretty much forgotten for decades. Well, impressive, and since they were blank slates, it was easy for JMS to extrapolate what he needed for the story.
Founded by girl geeks and members of the slash fandom, scans_daily strives to provide an atmosphere which is LGBTQ-friendly, anti-racist, anti-ableist, woman-friendly and otherwise discrimination and harassment free.
Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
