Welp, I see the writer is doing their best to make Carol seem moderately reaso - ... Nope, sorry, couldn't keep a straight face there. Props to the writer for making her so annoyingly sanctimonious and self-righteous, I guess.
-"I've been thinking about a new codename - Lockdown"- Bit of a problem there, Ginger Nazi Girl: 1: You're not a robot. 2: You're not voiced by Lance Henriksen. ... probably. 3: You suck. 4: You don't even have a face-gun, a chainsaw, or even a missing hand. Hell, you don't even have a poncho! You're not worthy of the name of Lockdown. Not by a long shot.
Carol: I have no choice but to have you court-martialed... and please tell me that while I've been been telling everyone that predictive justice is balanced, fair and nondiscriminatory, that you haven't been going around enforcing it... dressed like THAT!?
Becky: You bet. And not only that I found a symbol for us (Takes out a drawing of a Swastika) I looked it up online it's Sanskrit for "lucky". I though we should put them on our arm bands, so when people see us they know we're with Captain Marvel and their in for a "lucky day".
Actually, as much of a justified take that moment as it is, Carol's being a straight hypocrite here with Becky.
"For the crime of going wild with power and overstepping your bounds as a legal authority, I'm going to have you, a deputized teenager, detained for a court martial by... my own military court and not the actual justice system?"
Also don't like Kamala being rejected by one side of the Civil War and falling into the lap of the other. Fuck the both of them.
Timeline-wise this I'm certain takes place after Civil War #3/Spider-Man #8 and possibly after Civil War #6 -- plenty for Kamala to have already fallen out with Carol over -- so I imagine that Tony's respecting her desire to sit out the war beyond Jersey City. (One interpretation on Tumblr was Kamala no longer feeling safe by herself with Carol.)
And Kamala's "If you lock someone up before they even commit a crime, you make them into a bad guy, even if they weren't before" is as elegant and succint a summation of the fundamental flaw in Carol's logic as I've seen, which she's not even trying to address or answer, which does not help her case one iota.
This ain't Bendis. This is Willow. You can tell by the absence of rambling, the fact it takes less than a page for Kamala to make her point, and the utter screaming lack of any subtlety altogether. (Okay, that's not exclusive to Willow by any means, but still...)
Honestly, there are times when subtlety just means a bigger chance that people will miss the point, especially for something that's closer to being a YA book than Civil War is and ESPECIALLY especially when addressing a fraught political topic.
There's nothing wrong with beating the audience's head over a point, just as long as you're careful to only smack them once or twiceand not over and over again.
I still don't get why editorial mandate appears to be set in making Carol appear as unlikeable as possible, especially since she's being set up as Marvel's premiere female superhero with her own solo movie coming up in a few years.
On the other hand, it gives me hope that she'll have dropped the Idiot Ball by the time the first Captain Marvel trailer rolls out.
No, it makes sense! Tony had the idiot ball in Civil War I, then he had a trio of highly successful movies. So Carol has the idiot ball in Civil War II, then she'll have a trio of highly successful movies! Flawless logic.
