"It’s a love letter! It’s everything we love about superhero comics. We got it in our heads that we’re probably still four or five years away from being let loose on a Marvel or DC book, so we decided to build our own. Buzzkill already had this rich superhero world in the background and we could go play in that world. It’s a good hook, but without the other stuff it just becomes about what are we going to repo next week and that gets old.

The thing I like about The Paybacks is that in mainstream superhero comics you get a first act and then you’re perpetually in the second act. Spider-Man is always in his second act forever. The thing I like about The Paybacks and Buzzkill is that you’re going to get that third act.

From page one, panel one all of these superheroes have already lost. It’s over. How do you carry on and become a hero again when you’re a slave to the system?"

You know, that's certainly a better setup for superheroes fighting superheroes than anything Marvel or DC has come up with.

I don't dislike it in general and I find the hook even intriguing, but I would really like to see a few more positive books at some point.

Are there any current books around that do not go the bleak route and are ... fun? I really enjoyed DCs Secret Identity. It had a few dark parts, but it had this message of wonder and hope.

Some off the top of my head,

Astro City
Gotham Academy
Jem and the Holograms
Future Quest (Though knowing something about Hanna Barbera cartoons of the past fifty years helps and some of it may get a little dark)
Trinity (Well, based on two issues so far)

I have the distinct suspicion that what these folks love about superhero comics is not what I love about superhero comics.

A superhero database leaking is a pretty cool idea for a story that.

Last heard that used was in Civil War, when former member of the New Warriors, "Hindsight Lad", with the usual frankly baffling "event" mentality that afflicts minor characters, became unhinged whenhe heard about the Stamdford Incident and became virulently hostile towards them basically doxxing every team member past and present, living and dead, and promoting violence towards them.
